Melanerpes formicivorus
Lower Haystack Hastings Reservation
(20 June) 1700. In the nest, meanwhile, are still 4 eggs.
21 June 2000. Watched here at dusk, where there was an incredible amount of activity (compared to everywhere else these days) involving all 3 birds. As for the hole itself, 8461 came to it briefly (this bird, by the way, has a noticeably higher-pitched karrit than the other's) but soon left; later, 8307 (Or RW) came and roosted in the hole, more or less as expected.
23 June Watched here from 730-1030, see compilation on back. Once again, 8307 roosted in the nest tonight; both the other birds entered the hole after 1930 but left prior to 8307's entrance.
Also, 8461 chattered submissively/subordinately at one point when he left the hole while 8307 was at the lip.
24 June Watched here from 830-1130; compilation is on the back. The babies have hatched here-most trips were with food.
This evening, while Larry watched the nest tree, I went over and saw both mowing-streamered birds roost in the '75 nest hole. Thus, by elimination, 8307 again spent the night in the nest.
During the watch today, 8307 appeared to only have a metal band on his left leg.
27 June 1000. Checked the hole, where there was one unhatched (but fertile) egg, 2 live babies, and one recently departed baby.
I brought the baby home and opened her up, determining that she had been a ♀.
