Arrived at 4 P.M. Dr. Seth Benes in charge, Victor Seavin F.A. 2 peanut butter bits 45 traps (Museum specials) put out at 10 PM. Line ran from dirt road S across Sagehen Creek to open sage area beyond woods with scattered rocks. The first nine traps were located on area slope covered with sage (Artemisia sp.), and scattered Ponderosa Pine (Pinus ponder- osa). The next 9 traps were placed on stream bottom characterized by grass with scattered willow bushes (Salix sp.) and Ponderosa Pine. 6 traps were placed along the stream or stoney beach overhung by willow bushes. 17 traps (south of the stream) were in an open stand of Lodgepole Pine (Pinus contorta). The last 4 traps were in open area sparsely covered by sage (Artemisia sp.). One Osprey sunover Baca Reservoir Nevada Co., Calif. Sept 29 A check of the above mentioned trap line produced 9 Peromyscus maniculatus (5 prepared nos 125-127) and 1 Microtus longicaudus (no. 128). 3 P. maniculatus were taken on rocky slope, two in traps in meadow near the rocky slope and 4 were taken across in stand of Lodgepole Pine. A check at 10 A.M. produced 1 Eutamias amoenus from Lodgepole Pine. (no. 129) (no.s 140 and 141) a check at 5:30PM produced 2 Eutamias a moenus, one from rocky slope and one from lodgepole pine. Also one Eutamias speciosa (20132) from Lodgepole Pines. about 50 ft above at 9:30AM. 4 Macabee traps were set. 2 in dry meadow North of stream 2 south of stream in moist meadow (within 20ft of stream in very fresh diggings of Thomomys. hacker 956 P2 (Tour) locality? at 10:30 AM four Rat traps were set in rockslide. The area was all within 50 yds of Sagehen Creek. The surrounding (cont) those consisted of aspen and Ponderosa pine and open meadow with willows along stream. The traps were set a well-marked eroding points (characterized by white salt deposits on rocks, often found along knife edges) with special effort to select points that showed recent use (yellow stains or white deposits). All four traps were placed within 15 yards of southern (stream) side of slide. Walnut meat and dried apricots were bait at a check at 6:00 PM. One Neotoma cinerea was taken. The specimen (no. 130) was cold and stiff indicating it had been trapped several hours earlier, during the early or mid-afternoon. walnut for bait 15 traps (museum specials) were set along stream near rock slide mentioned above. These traps were placed at eastern (down stream) end of an island in the stream. The island was about 60 yds long and 15 yards wide. Northern side was separated from the mainland by only a narrow strip of water (18"-24"). This bridged by logs and branches in several places. The area was covered by heavy grass, and willow bushes. Several dead trees were present (yellow Ponderosa pine?) These traps were checked at 6 PM without result. Sept 30 at 8:AM the 45 traps (see Sept. 28) were recovered. 6 Peromyscus maniculatus were taken. 1 in rocky area, 1 in adjacent part of meadow and 3 in lodgepole pines. 2 specimens were prepared Cruss. 139 and 137). One Entomias a moenus was taken on the edge of the meadow area. (no. 142) The macaber traps from the meadows were recovered without further results. The rat traps from the rock slide were recovered without further results. The 15 traps from the meadow island were recovered without

Banks and I set 45 south of road on area covered by sage and higher on area with rock outcrops and sage. 4 Schyler traps along top of ridge. Ondrias and Muhlback set 48 traps across the road. Ondrias and I set 25 traps along [illegible] slope of Mt. Russell just above cultivated area at elevation of 1550'. During upon verification of permissions with George Hensar for camping on Mt. Russell's south east side. Ondrias and the area chosen for camping was an east running draw at about 1700' ele. Two traps sprung during dinner one yielding a Peromyscus and another Dipodomys. After dinner attempts were made to net small mammals seen in the headlights of the car. Walt took one Peromyscus along road from valley up to our camp, about 7 mi above the valley. About equal nos. (8 each) of Dipodomys and other small forms were seen. We continued on east and south to Lahaviee and repeated our route of the A.M. 70s then Dipos were seen except when we approached over the Mt Russell area again (2 seen on the NW slope of the Berneremi Mtns. Dick and I got 1 Peromyscus with long tails from the alluvial fan of [illegible] on the south slope of Mt Russell, and 5 short-tailed Peromyscus, also 2 Dipodomys. Long-tailed Peromyscus were taken from the rocky slopes. Two Meotona and one Perognathus were also taken from the rocky area. John and Walt got a similar distribution of their Peromyscus and one Dipodomys. John and I got two Dipodomys, one Perognathus, 5 long-tailed, and 8 short-tailed Peromyrs. from sage and scrub slope covered with thick grass just above the cultivated valley floor ele. 1550', S.E. slope of Mt. Russell. I had me Peromyscus from the Oaklands while Dick took one Peromyscus californicus from near a woodrat house. Walt and John had 2 Dipodomys from a canyon bottom covered with wild lilac, also one Peromyscus. Traps were set in this habitat in an effort to take more

Turned in about 11:00 P.M. Jan. 25 Up at 7:00 A.M. Walt said he had heard coyotes at about 4:30 A.M. as the moon rose. (I slept thru it.) Traps yielded one Dipodomys. About 10:30 A.M. Continued South to Canebrake Canyon on south side of Vallecito Valley. As we proceeded up the canyon we met Mr. Eggers . We secured the use of one of his cabins through his generosity. Traps were set in a nearby side canyon and across the dry streambed of the main canyon. The area was very rocky and covered with only sparse vegetation including barrel cactus, (40 Trap). Dick set traps in similar area farther up the valley. Here a spring furnished water that supported a stand of tall (15') cane (sp?). Despite trapping no mammals were taken during two nights of trapping. The bird life in the canyon included Phacinopeplas, Jays Phoebe, Costa Hummingbirds, Robins, Anduanda's Warblers, Orange- Crowned Warblers and White Crowned Sparrows.

Page 5 Journal Traps were also set in desert of valley floor at ele. of 900' at mouth of Canbrake Canyon, (50 traps). One Sage thrasher was collected in the vicinity of traps. Vegetation here included barrel cactus, that formed a widely dispersed discontinuous cover. after working on skins until midnight we turned in. Jan. 26 Trapping results were as follows: from Can Brake Canyon ele. 1100' Cyotes Peromyscus (light colored) Peromyscus (darker) , Peromathus 1, from valley floor at mouth of Canbrake Canyon, ele. 900' one Dipodomys. Vallecito About 10:00 AM we crossed the valley to Tres Palmas. This area was at the foot of badland on the north side of Vallecito Valley. There were extensive stands of Mesquit and a small spring. Palo-b Peplas and Western Bluebirds formed the dominant wildlife. Brewers Sparrow Cactus Hummingbird Also present were Sage thrashers, Robins, Mockingbirds, Audubon Warblers, quailcatchers, are cinnamon teal. 40+ Canada Geese flew north overhead and off toward the west. After several hours of collecting we returned to Eggers. Virdina and White Cr. Sparrows were seen in valley while running About 3:00 PM. we set Marcaber traps (11 sets) for gophers in an area of very active digging. Jan. 27 Weather cleared by 9: AM. Traps from around Eggers yielded Citellus, 2 Urocyon (M & F) Peromyscus (light colored) Peromyscus (darked) , Perognathus 2, Thomomys 2. Traps from the valley yielded nothing. Field Activity was restricted to specimen preparation. It rained during the night. Traps were set at Tres Palmas. Jan. 28 Returned to Tres Palmas early. Traps yielded one Dipodomys, Collected one Virdin. Gopher traps yielded animals. Traps from around Eggers yielded Peromyscus and one Thomomys. Jan. 29 Rain during the night continuing three the day, often mixed with snow. Over two hundred traps yielded some Perognathus. Such results and inclement weather convinced us to leave off at about 2:30 PM. We encountered far more snow above 1500'. We proceed N.W. to Rt. 78 and East to the Dalton.

Baker, 457 Feb. Pq 7 journal Jay and I went to the Berkeley Municipal Pier, at 2:30 P.M. Saw Common Loon, eared grebes, Western grebes, in bay. Coot and a ? merganser were seen along the east end of the pier (rock edge). Short-billed Gulls, California Gulls, Ringed-billed Gulls, Slancous-winged and Western Gulls, least Sandpipers were seen near of pier opposite the dump. One short-billed Gull was rapidly moving this feet (alternately) in a slight depression in the shallow water of a mudflat. This action seemed to stir up small animals from the mud that it would then grab with its beak. Such paddling would be carried for from 3 to 8 seconds. Only one gull performed these maneuvers. The gulls in the dump were mostly Slancous-winged and with a scattering of Westerns. The lake in the Aquatic Park (Berkeley) had 2 Cormorants (?), One ? Red-breasted Merganser, Eared Grebes, Horned Grebe, Tracta yellow-legs, Ann. Pipits, least sandpipers, ann. egret, Snowy Egret, Baldpate, suffle-head, Pintail. Feb. 9 Left Berkeley at 8:00 AM. ? Dr. Petelka, J. Schnell and London Oriens. Across San Rafael bridge. Note extensive salt marshes N. of Pt. San Pedro along San Pedro Rd. Visited Broad Scelopryell Association on highlands east of San Raphael. Continued West from San Raphael thru Fairfax to Samuel P. Taylor St. Pr., which we drove thru. Investigated a stand almost Pure Laurel at Tocaloma. Small flock of Townsendi Warblers and Chickadees (5 or 6) ? Ruby-crowned Kinglets. Dr. Petelka remarked that in this instance the warblers seemed to be the second numerous species instead of the usual situation where the (these?) warblers are merely an addition to the flock. One Hairy Woodpecker was also seen. Stopped for lunch at westward of Lucas Valley. The weather was overcast and deer were visible on the open, grass covered slopes. Over 40 were seen. Returned to Berkeley about 2:30 P.M.

Feb. 13 Left Berkeley about 2:00 PM w Marianne. Drove to Martin's via Soffette and Pleasant Hill. Spent about an hour looking over the nearby salt marshes. The area directly north of Martin's appeared very wet, the vegetation being rushes. It seemed unsuitable for small mammals. Marsh 1/2 mi. N.E. of Martin's were inaccessible because of intervening oil refineries. The marsh area along the Martin's-Avar road 1.5 miles from Martin's (E.N.E.) posted north of the road and heavily grazed south of the road. Traps were set in the marsh area 2.4 mi. E.N.E. of Martin's. This marsh stretches along Lucien Bay for about 5 miles extending inland less than 1 to 2 miles. In the area were 1 set traps Salicornia was the dominant vegetation. This area contained several drainage ditches. The earth dug from these furnished higher land that was covered with a variety of vegetation a grass with leaves in thick clumps being the most abundant. At this time the vegetation was almost all dead. Only occasionally did we see individual Salicornia have fresh growth. The adjacent high ground is grass, heavily grazed & a few scattered bushes and trees. A dump in located about 0.3 mi East of the area trapped. Minty traps were set forty five were set along the higher ground bordering the ditches. The other 45 traps were set in the pure Salicornia which in some places had shallow (7"-1") water over it. Debris in the Salicornia indicated that exceptionally high tides flooded the area. Three marsh hawks (1 & 2 DD) were seen hunting over the marsh. Song sparrows were seen commonly in the higher vegetation. A flock of 8 Greater Yellowlegs flew overhead. Feb. 14. Left Berkeley at 7:00 AM. The traps from the ditch yielded 17 Reithrodontomys raviventris halocetes, 6 Mus. The other traps yielded 6 Reithros and one Mus. Returned to Berkeley by 9:20 A.M. Feb. 15 Left Berkeley at 10:20 AM. The traps from the ditch yielded 17 Reithros, 4 Mus, 3 Microtus californicus, & Songe. Those from the Salicornia 13 Reithros, 2 Mus, 1 Sorex.

Feb 9 Journal Feb 16 Left Berkeley at 8:30 AM w Al Ziegler. Traps from the ditch yielded 14 Rethros and 4 Mus and 2 Sorex. Theather traps yielded 15 Reithros and 2 Mus. In an area about .9 mi N.W of originally trapped we found signs of more active Microtus population (recent grass cuttings, fresh scats) this area was along a ditch about 20 yards from the high ground adjacent to the western edge of the marsh. 100 traps were set here. Al found the remains of a Sorex in the marsh. 3 Pheasants 10-14? were seen near the Marsh edge (in the marsh) Left this area at about 12 noon and proceeded to Pinole, Contra Costa Co. Marsh area 1.5 mi N.N.W. of Pinole was investigated. The N.E part of the marsh on the N.W side of the Sou Pac R.R. tracks showed signs of recent Microtus work. In several places recent Salicornia growth had been cut and eaten. Fresh scats were observed. The Salicornia was generally dried and brown, however more recent growth was evident than at Martiney Marsh. To the N.E. of this marsh the access to shore areas is restricted by the Hercules Powder Co. (Hercules, Contra Costa Co.) Returned to Pinole and continued S.W. along Rt. 40. Marsh S.W. of Pt. Wilson could be seen from the road (Rt. 40). Entered San Pablo, Contra Costa Co., and drove north out of town down road to Giant. Proceeded beyond Giant toward Pinole Point until road entered restricted area of the Atlas Power Co. Returned to San Pablo and turned W on County Road #70 along the north side of San Pablo Creek. .4 mi W of Richmond City line turned north. Proceeded to Richmond Rod and Gun Club. Marsh in this area appeared suitable for trapping. Saw v dark Red-Tailed Hawk. Throat and breast Rufus buff and belly brown-black, Tarsi were naked. Hawk perched on ground in open field with space for evitation; several times he took flight and after a couple of seconds again perched on the ground. Continued on back to Berkeley. Al mentioned seeing caretaker of San Pablo Hunting Club to trap at Point Isabel. His house is

P. 11 Journal The [illegible] one on the left as one drives out on Pt. Isabel. Flock of more than 300 gulls were congregated in open area (parking area?) South of Golden Gate Fields, W of East Shore Hwy. These gulls seemed separated to a certain extent by species. Western and Glaucous-winged seemed to remain together. (Glaucous-winged were far more abundant) Ring-billed were presenting some number and associated to a couple of short-tailed and several Californians. Two young gulls [illegible] were very light brown and showed light colored primaries They may have been Glaucous Gulls. Returned to Berkeley at about 2:00 PM. Feb. 17 Jeff Berkeley at about 9:15 AM. & Al Ziegler and Marianne Hobbs. The traps at the marsh at Martiney yielded the following trapping results: those that had been in operation for the 4th consecutive night along the ditch - 15 Ruthros, 2 mus, 2 mics. and those in the open area 17 Ruthros and 3 mus. The one hundred traps set on Feb. 16 near the edge 0.4 NW of this previous area: 22 Ruthros, 6 mus, 7 Mics, 2 sorex. All traps were taken up. Returned to Berkeley about 11:45 PM. Feb. Left Berkeley & Paul Anderson @ 8:30 AM. Took left boat to Brooks Island, (San Francisco Bay), Contra Costa Co. 190 traps were set mostly along the lowland of the south shore and the adjacent area on the rid. This represented most of the area burned the previous fall (aprox Oct. 1956 according to P. Anderson) The lowland area showed many trails presumably made by rats (Rattus). One was aroused from a nest and utilized them in it's escape. Returned to Berkeley by 2:00 PM. Feb. Returned to Brooks Is. with Jay Schnell. Weather was poor; rain, stiff breeze from NW, followed by fog. Previous night, however, not raining. Trapping results were as follows: 4 mus, one eaten entirely, identification by lower jaw which was found near trap. According to P. Anderson there was a high density population of Microtus prior to the fire mentioned above.

April 10 Left Berkeley at 1:00 P.M. with Marianne Hobbs for salt marsh area near Pinole (0.7 mi N, 0.2 mi W.), Contra Costa Co. The Salicornia here had new growth. Some Microtus workings were seen on raised ground adjacent to drainage ditches. This raised ground was covered by grass and perennial shrubs as well as a little Salicornia. Traps (2,5) were set along this raised ground. 25 traps were set along railroad embankment that had a heavy grass cover. Both these lines were parallel and near the eastern (inland) side of the marsh. 45 traps were set along slightly raised ground covered by only Salicornia and in the adjacent part of the marsh. No Microtus signs were seen in the marsh proper. April 11 Returned to Pinole marsh at 8:30 P.M. Trapping results were: Microtus 2; Reithrodonomys ; and Mus. All Microtus were taken along raised ground mentioned above (Apr.10) All but one Reithrodontomys were taken in the same series of traps as the Microtus. April 12 Trapping results at Pinole were: Microtus 3; Reithrodonomys ; Mus . Traps checked at 7:30 A.M. Microtus and Reithos were again taken along raised ground. April 13 Trapping results at Pinole were: Microtus 2; Reitho 2 ; Mus!8 . Microtus from the same place but 2 Reithos were taken in the Salicornia. The traps were removed from the railroad embankment and placed along the raised ground along the drainage ditch W. of the previously placed traps which were not moved. The remaining 45 traps were placed along the top of the high ground between the marsh and the beach. This area is covered by grass and woody shrubs of max height of 10". Signs of Microtus seen in this area. April 14 Traps checked at about 2:00 A.M.: Microtus 0; Reithros 3 ; Mus not sawed but about 15 caught. Accompanied by Marianne Hobbs. Both microtus were taken along raised lander marsh places. Reithos in both Rain of previous night flooded usually dry area. April 15 Traps checked at 7:30 A.M. Microtus 2 ; Reithros 1 ; Mus not catch but about 10 taken. No Microtus from high area beach. We are low again.

Jun 4 Saw a White-tailed Kite as I crossed Russian River just east of Hopland, Mendocino Co., at about 5:45 PM. Returned at 7:40 PM. One kite appeared over trees along south side of Hayfield, south of Lakeport Road, 2.5 mi E of Hopland (just W of Russian R.). Bird flew west over field, second bird appeared. Both gliding and hovering, Attacked by two Redwings and driven back across field. Both birds perched in trees along west bank of river about 50' apart and 30' up. Male made one pass at female, slow swoop. Then ♀ attempted copulation for about 5 seconds. ♂ accepted-no visible effort made to fly away. ♀ had wings extended but bent back at "wrist," fluttering slightly during attempted copulation. Both flew off; disappearing beyond trees to the south and west. ♂ recognizable because of two inner tail feathers missing. ♀ reappeared briefly, perched in sight for about 5 minutes, disappeared again, not reappearing by 8:07. Both birds sighted again in same general area at 8:15 PM. from [crossed out Lakeport] roadside which parallels the river on the east. Jun 7 Numerous birds seen during the week while working. We drove part way up along the road that connects the San Joaquin Valley with the Panoche Valley (S.E. end of Panoche Valley) since this road marked closed for winter we didn't go all the way up. Stopped at location where Drinnell and Russell trapped Dipodomys ingens in 1932 (at 1 mi S.W.of BM 502). We failed to find any signs of these animals. Went back along road we had taken over from Mendota to point 4.mi. N., 8 mi E of BM 502 and set traps for Dipodomys ingens. I made 8 sets in burrow entrances as Drinnell and Russell has done. Cook put out 3 live traps. Citellus nelsoni also seen at this place. This area is about 1/2 mi. from the hills and on a very gentle slope, but before the cultivated area of the valley. Soil fine, silty, veg. just about 6" high. Returned to vicinity of BM 502; forded Panoche Creek due and drove North, across uncultivated land covered dry short vegetation and scattered low bushes. Several Citellus nelsoni seen. This road ran off this gentle slope into isolated cultivated land before reaching point with road from Mendota to the little Panoche Creek.

Feb 15 (cont.) We turned east at this junction toward the Little Panosha Creek, just as the road enters the hills along the Little Panosha Creek at point mi N, mi E of Mercy Hot Springs we have stopped. Here a flat area of 3 or 4 acres between the hills and the actual valley of the stream we found more burrows of O. ingens. We set more traps, I had 17 rat traps and Cook 4 live traps. The soil here was coarser than at the other place we found O. ingens burrows & numerous small rocks and pebbles. Cittella beckeyi also inhabited this flat. Several Hyla regilla were seen in burrows. At about 5:45 we continued on road up along the Little Panosha Creek. Stopped at point 5.8 mi N, 3.7 mi E of Mercy Hot Springs to see the skull of Genus from which Bill McFar had collected the skull two weeks ago. It was a ?. The collection of "predators" on the fence was heavy at the fence which included several kit foxes and a bobcat now also had a fairly fresh Coyote. I took it skull see O. (Ost, # 362) We continued past Mercy Hot Springs, just beyond which the fence stopped and we took a side road for a quarter of a mile along a dry stream. Here we camped for the night. I set out about 50 museum special, Cooke about 20. After supper we drove back toward the valley. At one spot along the road in a marshy area we heard a chorus of Hyla. Several other voices were heard which Cook identified as Toads. Numerous Opos were seen along the road. A night hawk flew away from our camp at our return. A barn owl was heard overhead. Feb 16 I checked my traps at our camp and had one Dipodomys dermanni, Cook had a single White-Crowned Sparrow. The traps at the foot of the creek North of the valley had two Dipodomys ingens. En route there we checked two old wooden bridges and an old shack along the road for rats but without success.
Page 173
Journal Page 4 We proceeded to check the traps east of Mendota. Mine had 5 D. nitrotoides, 3 D. heemani, 5 Peromyscus maniculatus, Cook got 4 D. heemani, (2 D. nitrotoides and 6 Peromyscus man- iculatus. Many of my traps had been set near the entrances of burrows. Activity during the night showed that traps had been obviously avoided by Dipor. Apparently the peanut butter bait completely failed to interest many of them. Several others had merely been caught by legs or tails. Only a very few were actually taken while making the bait. Most of the animals had "green" in their cheek pouches. Returning to third trapping location near the Perrache Creek, Cook found the remains of a D. ingens in one trap, (2 & Skull only saved) (C.S.T. # ), also he had caught a Citellus nelsoniadeleie. I had only the tail of one Dipodomys ingens. I shot a citellus nelsoni here. Numerous American egrets were often seen near the road in marshy fields on our return to Mendota. After lunch in Firebaugh we continued horse. Six or 8 white-fronted geese were seen in a marshy field about 4 mi. north of Firebaugh about 33. In returning we took Rt. 50 into Hayward and hence along Freeway to Berkeley. Arrived MVZ at 5:15 PM. Left Berkeley at 1:30 A.M. with Marianne. To Bakersfield via Eastshore Freeway, U.S.50, Cal 33+132, Modesto, U.S.49 to Dipton. Stopped for coffee at Madere at 5:30 (most rivers full and flooding due to recent rains. Water over the road in several places.) We had run out of most of the rain by Modesto. At Dipton we were detoured east to Porterville and hence south on Cal 65. Ran out gas apparently which delayed us for minutes. By 8:20 we were enroute again. We left Bakersfield about 9:30 heading E on U.S. 466. Had snow and rain over Tehachapi Pass. Got to Mojave about 11 A.M. Looked for promising campsites SW of town and upon finding nothing came Non U.S.60 to

Shaeer 1958 species account pg 3 Thommys monticola varities leaving this A.M. (total of 8 for the day). This field had a little alfalfa, some grass, annual plants and large areas thickly covered by braches (?) fern. There were numerous pine trees (yellow?) but no cedar that is common on areas below this. The soil was similar to that previously described for the area to field adj. to this one. The soil in both these fields was quite dry. June 17. (Hayti) Spr Cr Ranch 3560+ ft, 0.2 mi W, 0.3 mi S Big Spr. Lodiyan Co. Calif. (T. 40 N, R. 4W, sect. 8). This evening I caught four gophers in this field, all ?? : 2 ad. 2 young. There may represent boths forms. This field is planted in alfalfa with much clover and grass. Both pines and cedars were present in this field. The soil was fairly hard and rocky but perhaps slightly more moist than the field to the north. This field is planted in alfalfa and seems to be exclusively this. It is just W of the main house on the ranch. The gopher from here is as yet questionable as to which form it represents. An adult ? taken this evening by Dr. Benow may be assignable to the long baculatum form. When I put these specimens up (nos 480-489) the vaginas of all the females were quite long (Vaginas were measured from external opening (for further its branching of uterus). Hence I feel they are of the "monticola" Type note are 'size vary')

Thoelec 1954 Journal pg - 6 Oct. [illegible] Sagehen Creek to Sierra Valley, Sierra Co., Calif. from the road as we drove by. Put out two sets on the E side of the road within a few feet of the road and got 10 more on the other side. We continued north, NW. the road swing NE just before crossing the line into Plumas Co. about 0.6 mi. (by road) of the Co. line we turned off on a dirt road to the West. less than 1/2mi from the main road we saw an open meadow where there were some gopher signs and set out about 5 sets. I walked back down to the dry stream bed and found more gopher signs right along the stream bed and put out 3 sets. This area is slightly above the level of the Seira valley proper and in a valley that comes in from the West. Most of the area is covered with sagebrush but some areas of grass are scattered through the sage. In one of these we made our first gopher sets. There is a scattering of Ponderosa pine in the sage. A 45 min walk on the floor of the valley across the main road from this locality resulted in finding my most promising gopher workings. We turned back south along the same road we'd driven up. O.7 mi. S (by road) of the Co. line back in Sierra Co. We found a dirt road that branched off to the E. We drove back along it for about 1/2 mile through pine forest and stopped in a meadow where we found gopher workings. We set out about 8 sets here. The meadow grass is quite green in contrast to the valley. The area is much over-grazed by sheep. We stopped at our first sets and found two T. [illegible] in our traps on the W side of

C. S. Thackerup. 1960 journal p. 1. Apr. 9 SE Lassen Co. Trip - Apr. 9 - Apr. 16, 1968 Berkeley to Antelope Mtn., Lassen Co. & Richard Graham. Left home (Albany Village) @ 12:45 for Susanville. Drove up U.S. 40 to Winters Cutoff, over to 99 W and up to Red Bluff at 4:20 PM. Then turned east on Rt. 36. Began to see snow about 4700 +/- ft. We reached Susanville just after sunset about 6:40. Turned N out of Susanville, up around Hidden Valley. Turned right off the main road just short of the summit on a road that runs to the summit of Antelope Mtn. We picked out a camping place and looked briefly for gopher sign but saw none. The soil is v. rocky and the sagebrush is quite dense. By now it was dark so returned to town for dinner. Back out to Antelope mtn. by 8:30 PM. We both sat out about 40 min. Ap. The wind was blowing cold from the west and without a tent it wera problem to find shelter in which to sleep. Apr. 10. Antelope Mtn., 7.8 mi. E, 2.8 mi. N Susanville, 5560 +/- ft. Lassen Co., Calif Up at sunrise at 5:30 AM - cold, it must have gotten to freezing last night. I had 1 Peromyscus maniculatus, 2 Lagurus curtatus (one v. young. none than a month old), and one Reaginthus sp. Dick Graham got 1. Peromyscus maniculatus and the tail 8" - 24" high of a Dipodomys. The soil here is v. rocky, covered w low sagebrush. Occasional junipers are scattered about. This area is grazed by domestic stock apparently. Dick found part of a sign indicating that some poison bait had been put out at some time in the past. After breakfast we drove over to Willow Creek Valley. Spoke to the foreman of the Haassen Cattle Co., Inc. He gave us permission
Page 369
Thacker 1960 Journal p.2 Apr. (date) Antelope Mtn, Lassen Co., Calif. To set traps for gophers on the ranch. We located several large gopher mounds in the pasture across the road from the ranch and made 4 sets. There were lots of birds in the marsh adjacent to the pasture. Marsh hens, red wings, Canada geese, 2 sandhill cranes, cinnamon teal, and pintail. Several ground squirrels were seen in the pasture. We continued on NE (toward Lavendale) to the edge of the valley. Here we spent 3/4 hr. looking in a field without seeing gopher signs. On the way out we next checked our traps and found one where the gopher had escaped from the trap. We drove out to the main road and turned toward Laven-dale. We saw no sign of gophers either driving over or coming back from this valley. Much of this road from the summit down into Willow Creek Valley runs thru Pines (Ponderosa?). On the way back we turned off on the dirt road that goes down to Leavitt in the Honey Lake valley. Although we saw several places where there were open level ground, so too many rocks we failed to see any gopher signs. Only as we came out into the valley just before Leavitt (1/4 mi.) did we first note gopher mounds. These were pretty large and appeared to be T. Townsendi. We noted more along the road as we drove W to Burnsville. Here we turned north again as we had done yesterday. Just before we reached the summit before dropping down to Hidden Valley we saw some mounds in the right of the road. We got out 9 sets here, I about a 'V' pattern

Thrader 1960 Journal p. 3 (Apr. 10, cold) Antelope Mtn., Lassen Co., Calif. and 4 more on the left (W) of the road just beyond the summit. We found no more near the road as we drove to the NW end of Hidden Valley. We returned to Susanville and attempted to find a road up into the Susanville Mtns but it proved to be a private logging road. Having no better place to camp we, with some regret because of the cold winds, returned to our camp site of the previous night on Antelope Mtn. Arriving about 3:30 PM we started skinning last nights catch. After supper we got out our snap traps (1 bear and 47) and prepared for early bed. It is really cold here with that steady wind from the W. Although it clouded up rather threateningly before and during supper it now looks clearer. Apr. 11. Antelope Mtn. to Heart Valley and return to Honey Lake Valley Lassen Co., Calif. Up again at 5:30 after a cold [illegible] windy night. Our snap traps yielded only 3 Peronyssus maniculatus. Because the wind was so cold we left before breakfast, stopping for to look along the road over to Willow Creek valley. We picked up our traps there but had no success. We returned to Susanville and picking up our sets NW of town. Here we got 3 Thomsons bottae. From Susanville we drove east toward Kitchfield. We started seeing big gopher arounds, surely those of T. townsendi in the east part of town. They continued to be in evidence along across the valley generally on cultivated land but occasionally in sagebrush. East. We took the road that runs N from the valley

Thaelu 1960 Journal p. 4 Apr. 11 (cont) Around Schaffer Mtn to Secret Valley, Lassen Co., Calif just west of Schaffer Mtn. Noted numerous gopher mounds along the road as we ascended the gradual slope and set traps at several places! up from the valley, About 3 mile after turning onto this road it crossed Willow Creek, here we saw gopher workings on the flat land adjacent to the stream. After this the road climbed steeply for about 80' then less steeply completely for the next mile. This area is covered with rock; dark, pitted - of volcanic origin I suppose. Between the rocks grass and sage grow to some extent but the area in general appears unfit for gophers. After a mile or so we turned right, and took another right after about 2 more mile. This brought us to a halt on the west rim of Balls Canyon which flanks Schaffer Mtn (walked) on the northeast west. We climbed down into the canyon but although there were some flat land at the bottom saw no signs of gophers. We turned around and drove back taking the left fork to the left. Eventually we approached Secret Valley. Our preprevious trips had been slow - 3 to 7mph, but the descent into the valley was really slow. The road was so washed out that it took us about 20 min. to negotiate about 100 yards. Once we reached the valley floor we proceed north towards Karls. This valley was covered with sage and no gophers were in evidence. About a mile from Karls the road was washed out so we turned back around and eventually reached U.S. 395 at the southern

Still no signs of gopher working. After this we checked our traps further along the road and had two T. monticola apices. Then we drove on S three Sierraville and on E 1/2 town out of the meckly a little ways to eat lunch. Upon returning to Sierraville we checked some fields just outside (W of town) along Routes 49, and 89. but still couldn't find any signs of gophers, although here again there were old alfalfa fields. We then continued N taking the left (W) fork in Battley. At a place 1.9 mi. S, 0.1 mi. W Calpine, 5300+ ft., Sierra Co. we saw some gopher working in a dry stream bed. We got about 13 sets here and continued back to camp. We stopped and put out snap trap lines in McNair Meadow. We returned to camp here about 5:30 PM. I walked down the road to the W a quarter of a mile or so and shot a Macouni Chickadee, after supper we went down to McNair Meadow to shoot bats. They started to fly about 8:40 and we continued to shoot until about -- 7:30 or so. I got one Myotis which I dropped and failed to recover when I checked a few snap traps. Took two Microtus gorgicandus in my snap trap lines, by 9:30 PM. We returned to camp and skinned until about midnight. June 15 3.2 mi W, 0.2 mi. We returned to camp and skinned for a while. About noon I left the track to check gopher traps. I pulled all the set we had set getting a total of 5 T. monticola at the locality 5 W of Calpine. Then I drove back into the small valley that lies just W of the Sierra Valley and N of Rt. 89. I got out about 6 sets at a locality 2.1 mi. N, 0.3 mi. W Calpine, 4740 + ft. Sierra Co., Calif. Returned to camp about 5:00 P.M. Before supper I went out and shot a Hermit Warbler. After supper We Drove down to the Meadow (McNair) to shoot bats again. Tonight our luck was poor. Very few bats were flying around and neither of us got any but Pete Schreiner shot a Poor will that I put up. Returned to camp and skinned until about 11:30 P.M. June 16 3.2 mi. W, 0.2 mi. N Calpine, 5680 + ft. Sierra Co., Calif. I got up early this morning, about 6:15 AM and went out W of camp to collect birds. I got three, a fox sparrow, a hermit warbler and a common Snipesucker. There are lots of birds around this camp including Swinsons, and MacGillivray's Warblers, Oregon juncos, Holden crowned Kinglet, Pileated Woodpeckers, Red-shafted flickers Calliope Hummer, Western Wood Pewee, Empidonax (sp?), Swainson's [Pusset- backed] Thrush, Red-breated Nuthatch. Thaeler 1960 Journal p. 20 June 26 Berkeley to 2 mi. E Hobart Mills, 6000+ ft. Nevada Co., Calif. Dr. Miller, Ned Johnson and I left Berkeley about 8 A.M. in the MVZ Chevy. We drove up US 40 to Truckee about 1 PM and came to this locality about 2:30 P.M. after having lunch in Truckee. We made a camp just off the dirt road that runs from Hobart Mills to Boca Reservoir. Ned Johnson has a study area here for his work on Empidonax. We spent the next 2 hrs. seeing his some of the C. griseus and C. wrighti nests he has under observation. I then set off to collect birds, ended up getting a Pygmy Nuthatch and a Mtn. Bluebird. Returned to camp for supper, thinned until 8:30 P.M. and went out to shoot bats for a few minutes. Saw one bat briefly and had no chance for a shot. Turned in soon after returning to camp. June 27 2 mi. E Hobart Mills, 6000+ ft. Nevada Co., Calif. Up about 5:15 on a very cold morning. Dr. Miller's thermometer read 1°C. After a quick breakfast we all left camp. I ended up in working in a large circle around camp. The following birds were seen: Mt. Chickadee, Chipping Sparrow, Oregon Junco, Red Crossbill, Green-tailed Towhee, Townsend Solitaire, Mtn. Bluebird, Andean Warbler, Keelbeak Cowbird, Hairy Woodpecker, Williamson's Sapsucker, Wright and Gray Flycatcher Wood Pewee, Red-shafted Flicker, Night Hawk, [illegible] (sp?) and Red-tailed Hawk. This area is generally rather level, broken by low ridges and shallow canyons. The level areas are covered by open stands of

The slopes of the ridges and canyons are covered by heavier stands of yellow-pine and firs and spruce mix in on the meitic slopes. Most of the trees are second growth. There are few mature pines. The whole area is quite dry, there are no streams running water now and only one spring about 1/2 mi. S. The area is being extensively cured by sheep. A bear nearly ran over our camp last evening at supper. By about 10:30 AM the birds had become very quiet. Returned to camp about 11 A.M. Spent the afternoon thinning. After supper I went out owl hunting & Dr. Miller but we had no success. June 28 2 mi. E Hubert Mills, 6000 +/- ft., Nevada Co., Calif. Up fairly early this A.M. about 5:30 AM. After breakfast I went out to shoot birds on the ridges W of Camp. There are more heavily covered by pine with a sprinkling of white firs that sometimes form dense stands, none are too big, seldom over one foot D H. Saw a goshawk on the top of the ridge. He allowed me to approach quite closely. Also saw several for sparrow, and an olive-sided flycatcher. Returned to camp about 11 A.M. and spent the afternoon thinning. About 4 PM we took Dr. Miller to the bus in Truckee and bought more supplies, then returned to camp. After supper Ned Johnson went out hunting. I tried a little but shooting first but there are very few birds to be seen in this area. Thowl hunting was little better. We were able to call up only one don-land owl. Returned to camp about 11:30 P.M.

Thacker 1960 Journal p. 22 june 29 2 mi. E Hobart Mills, 7300 ft., Nevada Co., Calif. Up late this A.M. about 7:00 A.M. I hunted for birds on the ridge NE of Camp. It is higher and a bit more fir as it & a few lodge-pole pine. Saw brown creepers and Nashville Warblers which I had not seen previously here, I collected one of each. Also heard several evening grosbeaks flying over. Also saw golden-crowned kinglets and hairy woodpeckers. Returned to Camp and spent the afternoon and evening skinning. june 30 2 mi. E Hobart Mills to 1 mi. W Matis Peak, 7300 ft., Placer Co., Calif Up about 6:15 A.M. After breakfast I hunted for bird on the ridge NE of Camp again. A pair (?) of sharp-shin hawks were much in evidence here this morning. They flew close overhead through the trees on several occasions as I tried to call some smaller birds in. Returned to camp, spent the afternoon skinning. After dinner we moved camp, Returned to Truckee, took the road S from the E end of town. We turned off the hard surfaced road on a dirt road toward Matis Peak About 2 mi. short of the peak we turned N and drove on another road for about a mile to our Camp here. This area is covered by a forest of red and white fir and lodge-pole pine. About 1/2 mi. further down the road and a little lower down there is a fair amount of Jeffrey pine in the forest. Montanita is common on the hillsides in clearings and there are low willows along the streams which are mostly dry now. I tried unsuccessfully to shoot some bats which were

Thacker 1960 Journal p.30 July 21 High Rock Ranch, 4040 ± ft., T28N, R17E, sec. 25, Lassen Co., Calif. Up late about 5:45 AM and went out to check our traps, Bearder three & put up & had two D. merriami, both young, 1 of each sex. Mr. Benson also got a D. panamintensis ie. 5 species of Dipos here at one place. After breakfast I checked my gopher sets and picked up a T. bottae. Spent the day until late afternoon skinning. About 5:45 PM I went out to shoot antelope ground squirrels and got three in about half an hour. About a quarter of a mile S of the ranch buildings there is an area where hay had been put out last winter for the cattle. Ground squirrels are common here. After supper we set out our traps on the ranch. I mammal specimens put some rat and leleflyer traps up in a bunch of just W of the ranch buildings. The rocks are deposits that have resulted from the warm spring. The people here say the water temperature 79° F. Then I ran a trapline W of the rock formation, also some in the dry field S of the ranch where I had my gopher sets and a levee through the grass and other plants during an irrigation ditch S of the ranch. After I got back I started skinning my ground squirrels. Went to bed about 10:30 PM. 5080 ± ft., Kansas, Calif. July 22 High Rock Ranch to Willow Creek Valley, 9.5 mi. S, 4.0 mi. W Fredonys Peak. Up early about 5:30 AM. Checked traps and besides what I put up I caught 5. D. merriami 1 ad. ♂, 1 young ♂, 3 young ♀♀ (one a vaginal plug); 2 D. ordii both young one of each sex; 1 sub.ad. ♂ D. microps, 1 Penorquatus longimansus young ♂; 1 young ♀ leithodentamper but

Charles 1960 Journal P. 38. July 27 Mt. Shasta State Fish Hatchery 3440 ft. T 40N, R 4W, sec. 17, Siskiyou Co., Calif. [illegible] got out 8 sets. After an hour of waiting we pulled our traps. I had caught one Thomanys mayama, We then continued south thru Weed and on to the town of Mt. Shasta. In the center of town we turned W for almost a mile then S to the Sacramento River (or a major tributary thereof). We spent some time looking for gopher workings just West of here along near the river, but no success. Later we returned to the Mt. Shasta State Fish Hatchery. Here we secured permission to spend the night and later set out several traps around the grounds of the hatchery. About 10 P.M. we got tubed. July 28 Mt. Shasta St. Fish Hatchery to Red Mtn 5400 ft. Siskiyou Co., Calif. Up about 7 A.M. after breakfast checked traps, I got two Thommys mayama. After visiting briefly with Mr. Hill the Hatchery superintendent we headed S and then East on Rt. 89. About 6 mi E of Battle we turned SO off Rt. 89 on a dirt road toward Red Mtn. and Big Bend. After driving about 6 miles we reached a place where the road crossed Mousehead Creek (stream flowed from right to left when we crossed). This area had been recently logged and the area was open, covered by brush and grass. We found numerous gopher workings and got out some sets - I got in 9. After lunch I picked up several Racer along the stream. When I pulled my traps I had two Thomanys mayama. The forest here seems rather moist. Cedars and firs predominate rather than pine.

Thacker 1960 journal p. 42 Oct. 7 Sage Hen Creek Station, 3.7 mi. NW Hobart Mills, 6300' Nevada. Left Berkeley at 3:05 PM for Sage Hen Creek with 3 of the four students from Dr. Benson's Mammalogy Class. These were Helen McGinnis, Jerry Marten, and Don Calvert. Don Lequist had gone up earlier in the day to dr. Benson. We stopped for dinner at Bender about 6 P.M. and arrived at Sage Hen Creek Station at 8:15 PM. Since we arrived after dark there was no time to set any traps. Turned in about 11PM. Oct. 8 Sage Hen Creek Station, 3.7 mi. NW Hobart Mills, 6300' Nevada, El. Up about 6 AM. Temperature dropped to about 26°F last night - not too cold. Overcast last night. After breakfast we checked the traps Dr. Benson had put out last night. He had one Microtus longicaudus, 2+3 Peromyscus maniculatus, 2 Neotoma cinerea, and a couple of Thomasys monticola. Microtus and Peromyscus populations appeared to be well down. Numerous Tamiasciurus douglasii were seen, more than I remember seeing in past years at this time. Dr. Benson shot 2. He also got a Clark's Nutcracker. These birds were quite conspicuous. After checking traps along the stream, in the nearby meadow, on the S-facing slope just above the station and in the rock slides 3/4 mi. E of the station we drove west up the road to look at the brush field 2 mi. W of here. Then we stopped along the stream on the way back in an area of copse (these turning to yellow and orange now) and firs, then back. Late in the afternoon I took the students back up to

Thacker 1960 Thomomys "mayama" July 26 Dickerson Flat, 4200 ft. T38N R3E sec.6 Shasta Co. Calif. Yesterday I got out 8 sets and had two gophers this A.M. This locality is an open meadow in a forest of cedars, firs and pines. The "flat" is grass covered and periodically flooded. The gopher workings were around the edge between woods and meadow. July 27 Siskiyou Grass Lake, 5050 ft. T44N, R3W sec.23, Siskiyou Co., Calif. We stopped here about 1:30 PM to set traps for gophers I got out 8 sets in 45 minutes and we waited about an hour and a half longer before pulling up the traps. I had a single gopher. This locality is right along at U.S. 97. On the SE edge of the Valley. The gopher workings appear limited to a narrow strip along the edge of the valley. The grassy valley floor although grass covered floods periodically. The adjacent slopes are covered by yellow pine, sage and gresses. July 28 Mt. Shasta State Fish Hatchery 3440 ft. T40N, R4W sec.17, Siskiyou Co., Calif. Took two gophers this A.M. in the garden here. Soil is soft, slightly sandy, dark brown. I had traps set in a couple of other places around the grounds of the Hatchery including the lawn and a v. rocky, dry hayfield which had been recently cut over; but no success. July 28 Moosehead Creek, 4750 ft. T39N, R1E sec. 36, Shasta Co., Calif. Took two gophers here while we stopped at lunch time. This locality is along the N side of Moosehead creek where the road from Rt. 89 (just about 3 mi. SE of Bartel) to Big Bend crosses the creek for the second time.

Thaelec 1960 P.2 Thomomys monticola Apr. 16 2.0mi.S, 0.5 mi.W Beckworth, 4920+ ft., Plumas Co., Calif. Last night we set about 9 sets here around the base of a slight rise joints of the road into the nearby ranch. This is just W of the main road 5 from Beckworth. This area is cultivated pasture just W of the floor of the Sierra Valley on land that rises gently to the base of the mountains. The soil is loamy, easy to dig in, fairly dry. The area is covered with cultivated pasture. These gophers are REG #s208-211. Apr. 16. 2.0mi.N, 1.3 mi.E Calpine 4900+ ft., Sierra Co., Calif. of 7 P.M. Took one gopher here in sets that had been out shoulder of the for about 3 hrs. This locality is along the road from Calpine to Beckworth, on the floor of the valley. The adjacent land is covered with grass and a little scattered sage and the forest begins about a 1/4 mi. to the N.W. This specimen is R.E.G.#222. June 16 1.7mi.N, 1.3 mi E Calpine, 4910+ ft. Sierra Co., Calif. yesterday I got out about 10 sets for gophers along the side of the road here. Today I picked up 2 of this species from my traps Pete &hrann had several also. All the gopher workings we saw were restricted to the edge of the road. Here the soil was soft and deep - heavily covered w grass (a soft clod). No workings were seen farther E of the road beyond the fence. This land is brush covered and the soil may be harder. Thacker 1960 Thomomys townsendi P.2 Apr. 12 3.4 mi. W, 4.3 mi. N Liskfield, 4860 ft. Lassen Co., Calif. This able & secure her alive. The dust Sept. 15, 1960 in captivity - CST# 895 Mr. McAllister on whose ranch we are trapping informs us that although gophers are common here where we are trapping along the stream (Willow Creek) he has never seen them in his cultivated fields atop the steep rise behind his house. Apr. 13 1.1 mi. N, 3.2 mi. W Wendel 4010+ft., Lassen Co., Calif Yesterday afternoon we put out a couple of sets here and at the next two localities. This A.M. I checked the traps and took a gopher here. (REG# 204) This locality is just S of the road in a plowed field. The soil is somewhat sandy light colored and easily dug. 1.1 mi. W, 1.4 mi. W Wendel 4070+ft. Wendel, Lassen Co., Calif Got a gopher here - this area is uncultivated desert just S of the road. Vegetation is scattered sage and other desert brush & patches of grass - rather open with patches of white alkalie salt on the surface. (REG# 203) 1.1 mi. N, 0.3 mi. W Wendel, 4060+ft. Lassen Co., Calif Here I got a gopher in a sandy depression just N of the road adjacent to desert vegetation like that mentioned above. Apr. 14 Elyrian Valley, 5.0mi.S, 0.1 mi. E Johnstonville 4330+ft. Lassen Co., Calif (specimen became P.I) For a detailed account see Thomomys monticola same date and locality. R.E G.#207. Elyrian Valley, 5.3mi.S, 0.3 mi. E Johnstonville, 4330+ft. Lassen Co., Calif Yesterday I walked for about one hour across the fields of this ranch. Except for the gopher workings found that

Tharald 1960 Thomnys townsendi p.3 Apr 14 at Elysin Valley, 5.3mi S, 0.3mi E Johnstownville 4320+ ft. [illegible] and only are mentioned above (5.0miS, 0.1mi E Johnstamvill) there soho at this locality over the only ones seen. This. A. M. I had one gopher in the three sets. His locality is down near the stream. The soil is very moist, very dark - virtually black, with some mica flecks in it. The area is pasture other areas of the field being in a grain. The hills surrounding the valley are forested & pine which comes down onto the valley floor course around the edge. The stream a few yards from here is shaded by willows, alder. This looks v similar to where we got T. bottae senatalis along Gold Run Creek. The rancher here remarked that he has kept up a constant war against gophers and that there were few of any left on his land. Specimen REG # 207 3.0mi S Johnstownville, 4440+ ft, Lassen Co, Calif This locality is on the Mountain Meadow Ranch - Jack Brown's Boys Camp. Yesterday I put out 4 sets just W of the road. Today I had a gopher (REG # 205). Yesterday I looked further for gopher workings in the woods and adjacent fields farther to the W. Graham looked over the pasture to the E but 0/o results. The soil here is fairly dark, somewhat sandy. The workings are in a small pasture & forest of oak and pine (mainly) around. To the east it is open down to the main pt of the valley. It appears that T. townsendi along the W side of the Honey Lake Valley range to the edge of the forest (T. monticola range) except where T. bottae has gained access as around Lassenville - down to Gold Run Creek.
