July 16 Vallecito to Temec Mines, Imperial Co., Calif. (cut)
U.S. 80, then east to Winterhaven for supplies,
Namely beef at Arizona prices. Then we re-
turned west and north three of Gillly and the
Gold Rock Ranch. Here we talked for a few
moments to the owner, Mr. Walker, then drove
east to to the Temec Mine area. We camped
at one of the few remaining buildings, an
old Corregated structure on the north side
of the valley.
I set out a line of traps starting near the
building and continuing down along a gully
for about 250 yards. This line captured about
100 traps.
Later Al found a new mine shaft (horizontal)
near where we were camped. It was level of
where we were camped. We went up and over a
saddle and down the other side. But the valley
floor level well concealed by bushes near the shaft!
We found several Macrotus and Autrognous
in it. Later we investigated the 2nd mine
shaft that took off horizontally from
where we were camped. This one two
had Macrotus (about 5) in it.
This evening after supper our shed
proved to be alive with mice. We set about
twenty-five traps around inside. Also several
valts used the bldg. for night roosting but we
