Barker 1960 July 24. Butler Spr. Halls Flat, Balle Flat, 56.50 ± ft. T33N, R6E sec 2, hammeo. log, Flat and McCoy Flat both of which looked like possible places for Thomays batte. We missed the turnoff for Feather Lake but eventually found the place. Another 10 mi. of the bro road up to Pittville has been recently paved since the time our maps were made. At Feather Lake we looked for gopher working. A year ago Pete Lehmann had collected both T. bottae and T. zunicola here. Working we judged to be those of T. bottae were seen in brown soil, somewhat sandy, in grassy areas in the sagebrush soil which is quite low. Other working were seen in reddish, stony soil near the pine, yellow and dodgepole. We continued NW toward Pittville through a series of broad open valleys: Pine Creek Valley, Trays Valley, Grass Valley. All these appeared sufficiently similar to the Feather Lake to support T. bottae populations. We stopped at the Black Mtn. Forest Experimental Station (formerly Halls Flat R.S.) From here we drove NW paralleling the Power Transmission lines to Butler Spring, 0.2 mi. beyond the road off to Ballard Spr., this 1.2 mi. from the forest station. Here we camped and set out gopher sets. After supper I missed some bats. Later Dr. Benson checked his traps and got a T. bottae, shot about 11 P.M.
