Thaeler 1958 Species Account. June 22 Thomomys bottae Crystal Lake State Fish Hatchery, 3000+ ft., Nwi. Nasset, Cal. Shot! Took 3 gophers (514-521) from my best around the ponds of the hatchery. Gopher workings are very common in the dikes between these ponds. The soil is deep and moist and well covered by grass. The sets on the nearby low hattles had no they. The soil here is often very thin, more gravelly, dry and reel. June 23 Took 2 more gophers today (522-523). Shot from around the hatchery ponds. Dr. Benson had a couple of animals from the adjacent higher ground. These seemed to be identical to those wed gotten from lower down, in color pattern but were much smaller. The difference may be partially due & age, but it certainly is striking
