June 22 Left Crystal Hatchery to Crystal Lake State Fish Hatchery (can't)
away for the day one of the others of the staffs here
opened home for our use. We now have all the
comforts of home; hot and cold running water, a
gas stove, lights, and a refrigerator. After
lunch we set some gopher traps on the hatchery
property, mostly around the fish rearing ponds. Also
set some traps on higher ground (about 50ft higher) to
the north of the hatchery. Here the predominant
trees were oaks and junipers with grass land
in between.
Later in the afternoon I checked my traps and
had 3 gophers. All these came from around the
hatchery ponds. Just before dark I took up
my traps from the higher ground without
catching any gophers. Spent the evening skinning.
We had a heavy thunderstorm during the night.
June 23 Crystal Lake Hatchery to Berkeley via McCloud, likeyours.
Took up the remainder of my traps this A.M. and
had 2 gophers. Spent the morning skinning and
packing up. About 2 P.M. we left the Crystal
Lake State Fish Hatchery. We retraced our route of the
previous day up Rt. 89, turning north on
a dirt road about 9mi. east of McCloud. We
intended to go to Tennent but after covering about
10 miles of the total distance of twenty-five mile
the truck got stuck as we tried to ford a stream.
