Thaeler 1958 Journal pg. 17 June 22 Left Crystal Hatchery to Crystal Lake State Fish Hatchery (can't) away for the day one of the others of the staffs here opened home for our use. We now have all the comforts of home; hot and cold running water, a gas stove, lights, and a refrigerator. After lunch we set some gopher traps on the hatchery property, mostly around the fish rearing ponds. Also set some traps on higher ground (about 50ft higher) to the north of the hatchery. Here the predominant trees were oaks and junipers with grass land in between. Later in the afternoon I checked my traps and had 3 gophers. All these came from around the hatchery ponds. Just before dark I took up my traps from the higher ground without catching any gophers. Spent the evening skinning. We had a heavy thunderstorm during the night. June 23 Crystal Lake Hatchery to Berkeley via McCloud, likeyours. Took up the remainder of my traps this A.M. and had 2 gophers. Spent the morning skinning and packing up. About 2 P.M. we left the Crystal Lake State Fish Hatchery. We retraced our route of the previous day up Rt. 89, turning north on a dirt road about 9mi. east of McCloud. We intended to go to Tennent but after covering about 10 miles of the total distance of twenty-five mile the truck got stuck as we tried to ford a stream. The storm of the previous night and this A.M.
