Thacker 1957 Species Record Thomomys bottae p.2. Apr.4 (cont.) This morning one of my two sets here had a gopher of this species (834). I set several other sets along either side of the road this AM. The soil here is soft and fine, the ground is [illegible] cleared of sagebrush thinly and covered by grass and forbs. Apr. 5. This AM I had two more gophers here (838, 839). All three of these have been taken within 10 yards of the road. I haven't seen any sign of gopher workings in adjacent sagebrush. 2.2 mi. S., 0.8 mi. W Herley (sand dune), 4140± ft., Lassen Co., Calif. Had 5 more gophers here this AM. (840-844). I'm impressed by the way the gophers [illegible] have invaded this almost desolate patch of ground, fridging by their workings and the numbers I've taken (8) in an area of only a few (5±) acres; they are really quite common here. Yet in the adjacent flat, sagebrush covered areas they are at best scarce if not totally lacking. 1.3 mi. W Herley, 4060± ft., Lassen Co., Calif. Yesterday I put out a couple of gopher sets at some workings I found along side the road that runs [illegible] due west from Herley to U.S. 395. Again the sets were right along the edge of the road, the soil is fine, easy digging, sagebrush [illegible] the adjacent vegetation. This AM. I had one animal here. (845)
