C.S. Thacker 1460 P, 1 Thomomys townsendi Apr. 11 3.4 mi. W, 3.3 mi. N Litchfield, 4140 ft. Lassen Co., Calif. We set traps in a stubble field to the E of the road this morning. On our return this afternoon we had one of this species. The soil is light colored, soft, fine. Earlf to dig in. Specimen REG # 192 Apr. 12 Three We took another gophers here this morning, of which Graham put up. REG # 194; CST # 895, 899 3.4 mi. W, 43 mi. N Litchfield 4160 ft. Lassen Co, Calif. Yesterday evening I put out 9 sets on the flat land on either side of the stream just W of the road. This evening I had two gophers - REG # 195 and CST # 895. All but one of the sets had been set off or plugged. On several it appeared that a gopher had been caught and was able to get away since there was hair on the prongs of the traps. At one set three one trap was spring when I pulled it out but the gopher had just gotten off the trap and was still just inside the tunnel. She (as it later proved to be) tried to plug the tunnel entrance while I sat just outside. By removing dirt as fast as she piled it up I was able to keep her around for several minutes. At one point she decided in to pull out a handful of dirt and she grabbed me around the finger her incisors closing in front of my finger and thus not actually biting me.
