Thomomys bottae p. 3.
1.7 mi. E., 1.0 mi. N Calpine, 4910 ± ft., Sierra Co., Calif.
Yesterday Dick Banks and I set some gopher
traps here. This morning we had one T. bottae
and two T. monticola (also 2 here yesterday). This
area is in the Sierra Valley. Here is an
open cover of sagebrush with grass in between
There are a few pines that come out onto the
valley floor from the hills to the west but
these stop a hundred and fifty yards from
where we trapped. This area was along the
road from Lattley to Beckworth and Portola,
just north of a dry wash.
The T. bottae was taken in traps set on
the east side of the road on the shoulder.
All the T. monticola were taken on the west
side of the road. Here the principal areas
were gopher workings were seen and traps set were
on slight rises one or two of a foot or two. The area
where the T. bottae was taken may have been
on the somewhat lower ground between such
rises but since it was right along the road this
distinction can not be made with any certainty.
I paced off the distance between the place
where the nearest T. monticola and the T. bottae
were taken. The distance was 50 yards.
3.5 mi. N., 1.8 mi. E Calpine, 4930 ± ft., Plumas Co., Calif.
We checked traps set here yesterday and had one T. bottae.
This area is a little patch of grass in an area of sagebrush.
