Apr. [illegible] McAllister & Elysian Valley, Kern Co., Calif.
North of the valley. Apparently the Saticus have a dam along the stream somewhere above their land and divert water into irrigation ditches that are dug along either side of the valley at the edge of the trees. They were irrigating at this time and many gopher burrows were full of running water. However we were able to get out a number of traps here.
We drove back down Gold Run Creek to the main road and continued south and east along the edge of the timber to the Elysian Valley. Here we spoke to a rancher who has a place at the western part of the valley. He gave us permission to trap and catch gophers. But he said he had very few around since he had spent the last 5 or 6 years in an intensive campaign to eliminate them. He directed us to a place where he'd seen of few burrows recently and we set up camp and set out traps here and farther south near the stream that flows east thru the valley. However there were few gophers around. Apparently he's been rather successful.
The wind has been blowing this afternoon and evening. We've wondered whether or not the tent would stay up as several occasions. After a hearty supper we worked late skinning the day's catch.
