Berkeley to Vallecito Stage Station, San Diego Co., Cal.
I left Berkeley last evening at 8 P.M. with
Al Beck of the Dept. of Vet. Public Health, U of C. at
Davis. We drove all night stopping at San Diego
at 9 A.M. Al wanted to see some friends at
the San Diego Zoo. We left for Vallecito at
about 11:30 AM. Drove east along H.S. 80 to
the get. of 17, then north to Julian. Then
drove east on Rt. 78 to Scissors Crossing in
San Felipe Valley, hence south along paved
road to within 2 miles of the Stage Station.
This is to be our camp for the next couple
of days. Mr. "Bud" Bensit is in charge of the
County park here. Al knew him from previous
trips here and received permission to catch
night roosting bats in the Stage Station
bldy. We then drove down to Agua Caliente, about
4 miles farther east (and south). Here Al also knew
the caretaker, a Mr. Fred Swanson who gave
us permission to net bats over two of the
open pools that evening. We then returned
to Vallecito and slept for a couple of hours.
about 6 we got up and drove to Mason Valley.
This valley is 5 miles W along the road in from
Rt. 78. Between Vallecito Valley and Mason
Valley there is a steep rise. (Mason Valley being
higher. This is P. Stephen's La Puente Valley.
The vegetation is quite different in these two
