Thaeler 1960 journal p. 39 July 28. Red Mtn, 5700± ft., 5.0 mi. N Big Bend T38N R2E sec. 31 NW¼ Shasta Co. Calif. We continued on as the road climbed to the top of a ridge and swung to the N.E. Here where the forest opens we were treated to a spectacular view of Mt. Shasta. I think these views of Shasta from the E are the most spectacular. The mountain rises 3000 ft or so from gently rolling country — its symmetry is marred by the prominent Cindercone on the west side. The road continued on to the E of Red Mtn. Here the road ran along a ridge top, relatively level with steep drops on either side especially to the W. We camped just SE of the peak in an old deer hunters camp. Gopher workings were relatively common in more open places in the forest. I got out 10 gopher sets and about 80 mice specials. This place is loaded w/ bear scat. I saw it in at least 15 places while setting out traps. Flushed a covey of dusky grouse while walking thru an alder thicket. This place like the place where we trapped at noon is forested mainly by cedar and fir. Sugar pines were seen several places along the road during the afternoon. In general this mountain range between here and the Sacramento River to the W seems to be moister than the area to north of here (from Battle to Medicine Lake) that we drove through a couple of days ago. We turned in about 9:30 PM.
