Jan 8 Thirty eight traps (museum specials) set out on Strawberry Canyon,
of U.H.C., Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif.
about .6 mi E of staircase. Traps were placed on the south-facing
slope of the canyon in an area covered by grass and annual plants.
Traps were placed at 3:00 PM.
Jan 9 The traps were recovered at 9:45 M. Weather the previous night
had been cold and clear, frost was still evident on the ground.
Seven Reithrodontys megaphatic were taken. Six were prepared.-
nos 146-151. At one place groundwater caused only green grass in the area.
4 specimens were taken with a 10' rod hole here.
Jan 21 Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif. Left Berkeley at aprox 8:30 PM. E
Richard Banks, John Ondrisa, Walt Muhlback. Traveled .50 via
Walnut Creek, hence to Rt 99 via Rt 132.
Chowchilla, Madera Co., Calif. at 11:30 PM. Coffee break. 150 mi
Jan 22 Berkeleyfield, Kern Co., Calif at 3:30 AM Coffee break. 300 mi
Creston, San Bernardino Co., Calif. (977 mi.) Breakfast stop at 8:00 AM
arrived Perris Area, San Jacinto Valley, Riverside Co. Calif at
9:00 AM. Drove through Lake View Mtms. Land cultivated to base
of hills. Mtn area rocky & sagebrush and scrub. Drove on by
Winchester and north on Warner Road, North of Rt 24. Seen
ravens, Say's Phoebe, Horned Lark, House Finch, Savannah Sparrow.
Out one small pond saw 4 Reddy Duck & Coot, & Pied Billies
there. Just S of San Jacinto River saw 5 Rs. Weiged Teal.
1/2 4 & 6. Cont North and West to Rt 79. Turned N.W. over Jackrabbit
Trail thru the Badlands on the N.W. side of the San Jacinto Valley.
north
N.E along Rt 60. Turned off Rt 60 about 1 mi (elevation 1850 ft.) from junction
Rts 60 and 79. Up canyon for about 1/2 mi. Arrived 11:30 AM.
Canyon walls covered with Sonoran scrub, grassland, and chaparral.
During the afternoon saw Red Tail 1, Bush Tits 8+, Acutecatchers 3+, Bownowhee
Ravens, Crows 25+, Goldfinch, Say's Phoebe, Cal Quail on cover 25+.
Total of 64 traps set. I set twenty up a side canyon, along sage and
scrub slopes with bottom covered with other broad leaf vegetation.
Continued On toward at 2:15 PM. Drove down along West side of Mt. Russell,
turned West up south shoulder of Mt. Russell. Set Traps in area
