After breakfast I went out to shoot birds on the ridges W of Camp. There are more heavily covered by pine with a sprinkling of white firs that sometimes form dense stands, none are too big, seldom over one foot D H. Saw a goshawk on the top of the ridge. He allowed me to approach quite closely. Also saw several for sparrow, and an olive-sided flycatcher. Returned to camp about 11 A.M. and spent the afternoon thinning. About 4 PM we took Dr. Miller to the bus in Truckee and bought more supplies, then returned to camp. After supper Ned Johnson went out hunting. I tried a little but shooting first but there are very few birds to be seen in this area. Thowl hunting was little better. We were able to call up only one don-land owl. Returned to camp about 11:30 P.M.
