Sheeler 1958 Species Account. July 16. Macrotes californicus p.t. Trince mines, 700+ ft., Imperial Co., Calif. About 12 of these bats were found nice horizontal mine shaft about 1/4 mile east of where we camped. Of these three were collected (593-595). Antropogus pallidus was also seen here in lesser nos. Upon investigating the mine shaft at the buildings where we camped we found about 15 more of these bats, but none were collected. July 18 Mountaineer (New Era) Mine, 750+ ft., 5.5 mi. S., 0.6 mi. E. Vidal Riverside Co., Calif. This mine is located just south of the San Berdo. - Riverside Co. Line and about 2 mi W of rt. US 95. A recent sign on the road points toward the "New Era" mine. This is apparently the same mine known previously as the Mountaineer mine. To reach it we drove up a very poor road toward the vitis (Riverside Vitis). The road terminates in a steep descent into a narrow canyon. We continued on up this canyon to the mine. Here the workings are the left (south ?) side where the old hoist and other equipment remain show recent signs [illegible] of activity. We entered a tunnel in the opposite wall of the canyon, about 15 feet above the floor of the dry stream bed. About 30 to 50 feet inside a "chimney" extends up from the shaft. Here we obtained several Macrotes californicus as well as Antropogus and Eptesicus. Just beyond a shaft descends to the lower levels of the mine. Al Beck took all of the Macrotes we took here.
