were unsuccessful in catching any. About 9:30 P.M.
I checked the trap line and took 6 Perognathus, 3
Peromyscus and a Neotoma.
July 17 Tunco Mines, Imperial & Calif.
This morning my traps produced 7 Perognathus
1 Dipodomys merriami, 3 Peromyscus, and 1 Neotoma.
In checking the mine shafts I got several Macrotes
and Antrostyus to put up. While I settled down to
spend the A.M. skinning I went out to check
other mine shafts for bats. However after 20 min.
he called me to help get a rat he cornered under
a rock. After struggling for 20 min. or so we
were able to lift the rock enough to get a
shot at the snake and getting bitten. It
proved to be a Crotalus mitchelli. While checking
and retrieving traps that evening I got a [illegible]
tremodophorus out of one of them.
During the day the heat was oppressive.
This was heightened by a lack of water. The
area has no springs or wells so our water
was limited to what we had brought in.
About 1 P.M. Beck returned with several
bats he had found. These included 7 Eptesicus and
3 Pipistrellus that I put up. The remainder he banded
and released.
