Thacker 1958 P.25 Journal July 18 Tumco Mines & Mountaineer Mines (cont) Only 1 perognathus, 2 Peromyscus and a Neotoma. As soon as the packing was finished, about 8:30 AM we left the Tumco Mines, returned to the "main" road and headed north. Three Mid-way Well, Palo Verde (the country here was a treat after the area at Tumco) and on three Blythe and hence north on U.S. 95, just before reaching the Riverside - San Bernardino Co. line, about 6 miles S of Vidal we turned west off the main road at a sign indicating the New Era Mine (= Mountaineer mine) After driving about 0.8 mi., we parked the car and continued on foot, down across a canyon just above where it leaves the mountains and hence up along the canyon a total of perhaps 0.4 mi. from where we parked the car. On the left or south side of the canyon there was a mine shaft with several small structures. Opposite this on the north side another horizontal shaft opened off the canyon. We crossed and entered this mine. After working this level and securing a few macrotus, Antrozous and seeing some Mystis we descended into the lower parts of the mine. We went down a total of five levels, probably 300-400 ft down. The ladders and timbers all seemed sound. On the third and fourth levels we encountered good numbers of Mystus vellifer. The fifth level had very extensive tunnels
