Thacker 1960 P.4 Thomomys monticola June 15 1.9 mi. S, 0.1 mi. W Alpine, 4950 ± ft. Sierra Co., Calif. Yesterday we set out a total of 13 sets here. Today I skinned the traps and took 3 gophers in my sets. Johnson also had several. This locality is in a dry wash just W of the road. There are a few yellow pines near by but here the vegetation is sage and grass. The soil is quite rocky, in the wash and all the working are here. June 16 2.1 mi. N, 0.3 mi. W Alpine, 4940 ± ft., Sierra Co., Calif. Yesterday I drove N on a dirt road from Rt. 89 toward McDoris Camp. About ½ mi. S of the camp I parked. There is a little N-S valley here. I spent 45 min-1hr. looking for gopher sign before I found camp on the W side of a rather steep banked stream. Here the vegetation is grass. The soil is quite hard and quite dark. Today I got 3 gophers out of my traps. Much of this valley is flooded periodically and on the whole it seems well watered. Grass here is still generally green. July 23. Willow Creek Valley 9.5 mi. S, 4.0 mi W Fredonyer Peak 5080 ± ft. Kassen Co., Calif. Late evening I set out 13 sets and today took a 8 gophers. This locality is in a recently cut hayfield in rolling terrain, well above the main part of the valley. The fields are irrigated by flooding but not all areas get equally wet because of the terrain configuration. The soil is [illegible], loamy, easily dug except for the plant roots. Heavily timbered areas are adjacent to the fields.
