Species Account
Thomomys tawrendi selectus (p.1)
Apr.3 3.4 mi. N., 2.6 mi. W. Doyle, 4250 +/- ft. Lassen Co., Calif.
This morning while driving along U.S. 395 north
of Doyle I noted several large gopher mounds on
the W side of the road, just beyond a sign warning (North)
motorists of presence of livestock. I set out three
sets of gopher traps, two in track from the road a
few yards and one on the shoulder. The tunnels of these
animals are very large. When they are straight
I could put my entire forearm into one.
This evening I took one gopher from the set on the
shoulder of the road. This area is on a hill side,
facing S W and overlooking the Long Valley Creek.
It is one hundred feet or so above the stream.
The vegetation is open with scattered
clumps of brushers. Some at least are sage. The
intervening areas are grass covered. The soil is sandy,
easily to dig in, reddish-yellow in color.
The distance from Doyle was figured from
a point where U.S. 395 crosses the seed line between
sect. 8 and 17 of T. 25 N., R. 17. E. This point was also used
for figuring the T. monticola locality on the
Rawland Ranch. I used the Doyle, Calif. 15' quad, 1954
of the U.S.G.S.
Apr.5. 0.3 mi. S., 3.0 mi. W Herley, 4020 +/- ft., Lassen Co., Calif.
Last evening I set a couple of gopher sets on the
south shoulder of the main E-W road into Herley
from U.S. 395 at this point. This area is gently sloping
