Thacker 1959 Journal p. 2 Apr 3 (sat) Herling, Lassen Co., Calif. from US 395 just before the underpass under the W. P. railroad tracks. After checking and resetting my traps I secured permission from Mr. Rowland to trap on his land near the stream. I drove back to US 395 and south along it to a point opposite the Rowland Ranch Bldgs. This area west (West) to the road is low and somewhat marshy, covered by grass and low trees. Beyond the higher ground grass covered but sparsely so a few scattered bushes. It is grazed. After an hours search I'd seen no gopher sign. I did find about 50 Muskrat specials and returned to Herling. On the way I saw some gopher workings just W of US 395, north of where it crosses Long Valley Creek. I stopped and put out 3 sets, all within 7 ft. of the road. After lunch I drove around on some dirt roads just SE of Herling. The country was flat and covered with heavy stands of Sagebrush. Although I looked for over an hour I was able to see no signs of gopher workings either along the roads as I drove or in the sagebrush or short walks I took away from the road. On the way back to Herling I noticed some mounds on a bare sand dune a quarter of a mile away. Subsequent investigation showed that these were gopher workings. I put out 5 sets. On the way back to Herling I set out two sets along the road (CO 4 mi S, 1.6 mi W Herling). In the late afternoon I rechecked my
