Thaeln 1958 Species Account. Thomomys (monticulus "pinetorum") - [illegible] R4.1 Lombardi Ranch, 3225±ft, 1/2 mi WNW Mt. Shasta P.O., T 40N, R 4W, sec 17, Shasta Co, Calif. Set out 40 gopher traps (Macabee) during the afternoon. About 6 were in single sets on lateral tunnels, the remainder or main tunnels in pairs. The area trapped consisted of cultivated fields on the Lombardi Ranch. One field was planted in oats. Two kinds of seeds were used in planting and the resulting plants now averaged about 4" and 8" high. Prior to this year the field had been in alfalfa but Mr. Lombardi had decided plowed it under since the gophers are so abundant. I also put 3 sets in a field of alfalfa and grass. Most of traps were placed in fresh mounds some not more than a few hours old. The soil for the top 3" was very dark, fine and light. It had lots of small rock fragments (angular not stream-worn) Below this layer was a tender or silted almost lighter in color—approaching yellow. The land was well grained. The surrounding area was conifer forest with cedar and doug fir as two of its prominent species, also more open meadows to conifers and deciduous trees. Upon checking the traps about 7:30 PM I had catchen 7 animals (nos. # 46-452). Three of these had come from the three sets in the alfalfa. Two of these were reset also in the alfalfa field. The other five sets were not reset,
