Berkeley to 3.2 mi.W, 0.2 mi.N Calpine, Sierra Co., Calif. (56800)
Pete Schramm and I left Berkeley about 8:15 A.M in
MVZ Chev for the Sierra Valley to trap gophers mainly.
We stopped in Sacramento to pick a hand pick and gloves
for me and made Truckee up about 1:20 P.M. After
a quick lunch we drove on to the valley.
We talked with the Forest Ranger at Sierraville.
He suggested a place for us to camp here just east
of the valley, above McNair Meadow. He also got talking
about the local deer. Said that a lot winter from
Sierraville NE along the foothills of the valley up to
Vinton, also some more farther E into the desert areas
along the State line. He said he saw and estimated about
800 deer between Sierraville and loyalton last winter.
From here we drove up the west side of the Sierra Valley
to the Sierra Ranch. After talking to the owner, a
Mr. Terrell (sp?) looked over some of his fields for gopher
sign with no results; either E of the ranch in lower
land that looks like it may flood fairly regularly or
W of the ranch in higher land, for wheat and
sage off and years. We then drove back to the road
and further N to the place where I got T. battae last
fall. Here we walked along the road shoulder for about
half a mile and got out about 10 or 12 sets. Many
of these were in thick patches of grass (soft chess?).
However although we got out traps here we had no
luck just on the other side of the fence away from
the road.
