Oct. [illegible] Sagehen Creek to Sierra Valley, Sierra Co., Calif.
from the road as we drove by. Put out two sets on the E side of the road within a few feet of the road and got 10 more on the other side. We continued north, NW. the road swing NE just before crossing the line into Plumas Co. about 0.6 mi. (by road) of the Co. line we turned off on a dirt road to the West. less than 1/2mi from the main road we saw an open meadow where there were some gopher signs and set out about 5 sets.
I walked back down to the dry stream bed and found more gopher signs right along the stream bed and put out 3 sets. This area is slightly above the level of the Seira valley proper and in a valley that comes in from the West. Most of the area is covered with sagebrush but some areas of grass are scattered through the sage. In one of these we made our first gopher sets. There is a scattering of Ponderosa pine in the sage.
A 45 min walk on the floor of the valley across the main road from this locality resulted in finding my most promising gopher workings.
We turned back south along the same road we'd driven up. O.7 mi. S (by road) of the Co. line back in Sierra Co. We found a dirt road that branched off to the E. We drove back along it for about 1/2 mile through pine forest and stopped in a meadow where we found gopher workings. We set out about 8 sets here. The meadow grass is quite green in contrast to the valley. The area is much over-grazed by sheep. We stopped at our first sets and found two T. [illegible] in our traps on the W side of
