Journal Page 7 (previous pgs. not in MVZ pups) Berkeley to Mt. Shasta. June 11. Left Berkeley at 11:30 A.M. after completing the loading of the truck at the home of Dr. Benson. Stopped at Davis Campus to pick up live troops for gophers from D. Tomich. Continued on at about 1:30 N on Rt. 99 W. Stopped for coffee at Arbuckle at about 2:30. Weather was overcast & slight drizzle in Bay Area, but fair in the valley. Reached Redding shortly before 6 P.M. and stopped for supper. Continued N on Rt. 99. Stopped at public camp ground at Bailey Cove to repark the truck. Since the camp grounds were crowded and the weather was very threatening we decided against spending the night there. Continued on to the town of Mt. Shasta, arriving at about 10:30, having stopped for coffee in Burney. Since the weather was still threatening we took a room in the Park Hotel. The clerk at the desk was apparently taken aback by our appearance - must have considered us little more than tramps. However, once he realized we were from the university and were collecting gophers he became very talkative. Dr. Benson asked numerous questions about gophers, local game wardens, etc. He also informed us that the weather during June had been very rainy - rain at least once a day. However, the current forecast is for clearing after the current storm.
