We proceeded to check the traps east of Mendota. Mine had
5 D. nitrotoides, 3 D. heemani, 5 Peromyscus maniculatus,
Cook got 4 D. heemani, (2 D. nitrotoides and 6 Peromyscus man-
iculatus. Many of my traps had been set near the
entrances of burrows. Activity during the night showed that
traps had been obviously avoided by Dipor. Apparently the
peanut butter bait completely failed to interest many of them.
Several others had merely been caught by legs or tails. Only
a very few were actually taken while making the bait.
Most of the animals had "green" in their cheek pouches.
Returning to third trapping location near the Perrache Creek,
Cook found the remains of a D. ingens in one trap, (2 &
Skull only saved) (C.S.T. # ), also he had caught a Citellus
nelsoniadeleie. I had only the tail of one Dipodomys ingens.
I shot a citellus nelsoni here. Numerous American egrets
were often seen near the road in marshy fields on
our return to Mendota. After lunch in Firebaugh
we continued horse. Six or 8 white-fronted geese were
seen in a marshy field about 4 mi. north of
Firebaugh about 33. In returning we took Rt. 50 into Hayward
and hence along Freeway to Berkeley. Arrived MVZ at 5:15 PM.
Left Berkeley at 1:30 A.M. with Marianne. To Bakersfield
via Eastshore Freeway, U.S.50, Cal 33+132, Modesto, U.S.49 to
Dipton. Stopped for coffee at Madere at 5:30 (most rivers full and
flooding due to recent rains. Water over the road in several
places.) We had run out of most of the rain by Modesto.
At Dipton we were detoured east to Porterville and hence south
on Cal 65. Ran out gas apparently which delayed us for minutes.
By 8:20 we were enroute again. We left Bakersfield about 9:30
heading E on U.S. 466. Had snow and rain over Tehachapi
Pass. Got to Mojave about 11 A.M. Looked for promising campsites
SW of town and upon finding nothing came Non U.S.60 to
