Apr. 16 Portola, Plumas Co., to Berkeley, Calif.
toward Loyalton. Just north of this town we finally spotted gopher workings in an adjacent field. We found that the property was owned by a Mr. Potter who was glad to give us permission to trap on his land. He also directed us to another field which he owned and leased to a nephew that had many gophers in it. We set out 6 or 7 sets near his ranch and proceeded to the other fields, due east of here. Here, in alfalfa were riddled with gophers. We got out about 30 sets and while recking a few found T. talpoides. We returned to the Potter Ranch and got several more T. talpoides.
The Potters seemed interested in what we were doing and we ended up talking for about an hour and a half, during which time we turned down an invitation to stay to lunch.
Finally we were able to break away and drove around the south end of the valley, thru Sierraville, north toward Calpine [illegible] and Beckworth. Just S of the Sierra-Plumas Co. Line we set out 5 pr. of traps. We drove into the Sierra Valley Ranch to try to gain permission to trap. This is a really big place and some of the land looks suitable for gophers although we saw no workings from the road. However, we were
