High Rock Ranch, 40 40+ ft. T 28 N, R 17 E, sec. 25 harve C. caly.
2 D. deserti caught from his snap traps.
I spent the rest of the day until about 3 PM skinning,
Dr. Benson skinned for a while and then went
to kitchfield to shop for food.
About 3 PM I checked my gopher sets and
set several more. One set was plugged for the
second time. Then Dr. Benson looked for a
place to catch more D. deserti in caly,
Checked some low dunes SE of the ranch
buildings here (about 1/2 mi.) but no
woodpecker or
success. Then we drove about 1 mi. W
to some more dunes just off the road. Here
we saw D. deserti working and put out our
snap traps. Returned to compact the Ranch about
6:30. Checked my gopher sets and had one
despite the mosquitoes which are v. bad
in the fields at this time.
There are numerous water birds
around here since there are marshes south of
the ranch. Crows were seen in fields as
well as perhaps 20 geese, and a Wilson's trip.
Nighthawks are common and fly often
during the day. A pair of red tailed hawks
have been seen regularly. Kingbirds are
common around the trees of the ranch.
Turned in just before midnight!
