Thaeln 1954 Species Account. Thomasys Monticola p. 1 Apr. 3 Rowland Ranch, 3 mi S, 1.0 mi E Doyle 4350 ft Lassen Co, Calif. Last evening I set out about 10 gopher sets in a pasture on the Rowland Ranch John M Corley was instrumental in helping me get permission to trap here. This pasture was right across the road and railroad from the main ranch bldgs (East). The pasture was at present in grass, I assume it had been seeded. The lower part of the pasture was irrigated but I trapped above this. This land is gently sloping to the east toward the river bottom a mile or so beyond. The area is below the much steeper hills of the Sierras that rise up just a 1/4 mi to the west. The soil is dark brown and rather silty or or loamy, at least it is neither clay or sand. Mr Rowland tells me there are very few gophers below this nearer the river. Although I spent an hour or so on the bottom land just west of US 395 adjacent to this pasture I could find no gopher sign. There may be gophers to the east of 395 in the sagebrush. These traps yielded 4 gophers in the AM and 3 more this evening. Apr 4 Same local. I took out 5 more gophers this AM and pulled out the remainder of my traps. Total catch in this has been 3 AM, 9 PM in an area of perhaps 3 acres. There are still about gophers here probably almost as many as live tocken,
