Israel 1960 Journal P.24 July 1 Randise Meadow, 1 mi N, 1 mi W Martin Peak 7000+ ft. Placer Co., Calif. the meadow I wasn't able to shoot any. About 45 minutes after sunset I started hearing Flamulated Owls, after pursuing one for a few minutes on the N side I lost him but my imitation attracted calls from a horned owl on the south side of the meadow. I went after him for a while but never got a shot. I could get him to "hoot" only in response to my [crossed out] horned Flamulated Owl call not my hornedowl imitation. After about 30 minutes of trying to get a shot the owl moved off and I lost him. I returned to the N side and [crossed out] started after the Flamulated again. At one place I got quite close but perked up a second owl with my light (not the one which had been calling). My shot missed. So I continued after the individual which had been calling, and followed him to the top of the ridge before losing him. Later I called up another on the ENE end of the meadow. I chased this one into some fairly dense timber, saw him fly several times but could never locate him perched. In 45 minutes of hunting him I never got a shot. By now it was a little after midnight and the moon was up. I heard no more owls on the way back to camp although I continued calling. Did get two Spotted Owls during the night.
