Thomasys monticola
Apr. 14 (last)
Elyseum Valley, 5.0 mi. S., 0.1 mi. E. Johnstunville Lassen Co., Caly.
This is as close as I have ever seen any two species of gophers. In this connection it is interesting to note that this valley, although it appears to be a good gopher habitat shows v. little activity. Although yesterday we spent about 1/2 hrs looking for gophers the place mentioned on the previous page and one other xst place where a T. Townsendi was taken near the stream about '1/2 mi. away were the only gophers workings seen. There are at present only a few gophers in this valley.
The owner of this ranch told us he has spent much effort eliminating gophers from his property. In fact when we first spoke to him about trapping he seemed dubious about our chances for success until one of his hired hands mentioned seeing these workings here. Perhaps the low density and hence the reduced competition between gopher species is responsible for this mixing (?) of gopher species.

Gold Run Creek, 4.2 mi. S., 1.7 mi. W. Susanville, 4440 ± ft.
Lassen Co., Calif.
(C.S.T#710)
Took one of this species here today at the edge of the meadow, farther Ward higher up than the T. buttae. The nearest buttae creeps about 150 yards away.
The soil here was somewhat more sandy than where I got the buttae.
