Apr. 15 (sat) Chysan Valley to Portola Plumas Co., Calif.
turned west on Rt. 24 toward Chilcoot and Portola.
We drove up [the] (North) thru the Long Valley on a
dirt road for about 4 1/2 miles. Although this area
looked suitable for gophers a casual inspection
showed nothing. We returned to the main
road and continued W into the Sierra Valley.
About 3 mi. E of Beckworth we saw some
gopher workings in farm land adjacent to
the road but did not stop. I would suppose
that there are probably T. Talpoides. At Beckworth
we turned south toward Calpine and Sierraville
on unnumbered road. We looked for gopher signs at
one of the two
the localities where I'd taken T. bottae last
fall but saw nothing, at this locality (3.5 mi W, 1.8 mi.
E Calpine, Plumas Co., Calif.) we drove [illegible] on a
dirt road for about a mile before hitting posted
property. - no gopher signs.
We returned to Beckworth stopping en
route to set and traps at a ranch 2.0 mi S, 0.5 mi. W
Beckworth, Plumas Co. For the first and only time (I
hope) on this trip we had a little trouble securing
permission to set traps. The rancher seemed
less concerned with his gophers and actually
there were very few on [illegible] his ranch. However
we did secure his permission and got out
a few gopher traps. We then drove into Portola
for supper and after many cups of coffee drove east
