Fairly common Late Ned and I went out hunting. He took a pugging out early in the evening. Later we heard fox along a 1/4 mi. stretch of road about 1/2 mi. below camp. Ned was able to shoot one. Returned to camp about 11:15 P.M.
July 1
1 mi. W Martin Peak, 7300+ft., Placer Co.
Up about 7:15 A.M. I hunted the area Nard NE of Camp this morning but a little success. The birds stayed high in the trees. Red crossbills, evening grosbeaks, pine siskins and Cassin's finches were common, all flying overhead.
The area about 1 1/2 mi. NE/here is large drain and pine covered. At Klondike Meadow, about 1 1/2 mi. below camp I shot a marmot. Killdeer were seen here as well as Wilson Warbler, White-crowned Sparrows, Lincoln sparrows, and swavel finches.
Returned to camp about 1 P.M. Skinned during the afternoon.
About half an hour before sunset Ned drove me back down to Klondike Meadow. Just after leaving the car along the south side of the meadow about 30 yds. from a shack I saw or large mustelid. I ran into the hollow base of a burnout pine and disappeared. Although I banged the tree for a minute or so I couldn't dislodge him. There can be little doubt that it was a fisher (Martes americana). Although I have never seen this animal before the light was still good and he was only about 30 yards away.
There were a few bats flying over the.
