Oct. 2
Berkeley to Sage Hen Creek, Nevada Co., Calif.
Left Berkeley with Dr. Benson and
Bill Maher at 8:15 A.M. Dr. Benson is taking
his Mammalogy class on a field trip. We
arrived at Sage Hen Creek about 2:00 P.M.
We stopped along Rt. 89 just beyond
Prusser Creek and I set out 4 gopher
sets. I was able to borrow a University
car, the kindness of Dr. P. R. Verdine's
vehicle, and drove to Boca Reservoir,
Nevada Co. I set out 6 gopher sets on a
level area above and east of the dam.
On the way back I set out 8 sets 1.5 mi. (approx.)
by road from the dam to Rt. 89. Checked my
set along Rt. 89 and got one Thomomys
monticola.
Oct. 3.
Sage Hen Creek, Nevada Co., Calif.
To take up monticola
Up early this A.M. and off to gopher sets over
near Boca Reservoir. Got just one north east of Boca.
Back to Sage Hen for breakfast. After breakfast
Dick Banks and I drove north to Sierraville and
hence NW along the west side of the valley.
At Lacey we took the right fork and continued north
up the valley. We stopped at a point 1.5 mi E of Calpino
and wandered around looking for gopher signs on the
left (W side) of the road. This area is covered sparsely
by Sagebrush and grass. It appears overgrazed. Saw
no sign of gophus but did see diggings of moles.
A mile and a half north we saw some gopher mounds
