yesterday we (Ben and myself) set
gopher traps on the Ferrero Ranch, 3600 ft. 1/2 mi.
N Mt. Shasta PO. (T40N, R4W, sec9) Siskiyou Co. Cal.
This morning we had a total of 10 gophers
(I had 5 from 6 double and one single set.)
One was an ad. ♂ (C.S.T. # 463) all others were
ad. ♀♀. (#s 464-467 for those I caught). All
of these appeared different from those taken
prior on the Semberdis ranch (see T. m. "picturus"
The ♂ had a distinctly shorter occularis, also the
ears were in general larger, esp. the crown
measurement which was usually for 9 mm
rather than 6 or 7. Also the tail length averaged
larger. The ears, esp. of the ♂ were distinctly pointed.
They seemed to average less in weight than the
other gophers, but this may be correlated to what
appeared to be a poorer field.
The habitat was the gentle slope of the
base of Mt. Shasta (the others were on the
valley floor). The field I trapped over an
old alfalfa field that now had a covering
of grass and annuals & scattered alfalfa
plants. The soil seemed harder, with less
rock in it than the soil where the gophers
from Semberdis were taken. It was dark brown for
the first 10". Below was a more sandy lighter earth.
