McAllister Ranch, 4.3 mi. N., 3.4 mi. Whitesfield, Lassen Co., Calif.
Up late this A.M. - 7:00. After breakfast we went into Susanville for supplies. About 3 mi. east (and a little S.) of
Susanville, by road, we stopped at the Loran River Ranch,
owned by Mr. McKenzie. He gave us permission to
drive around his ranch to look for gophers. There were
plenty of T. townsendi working on that part of his
property that is on the valley floor. However,
we drove on Noma dirt road that runs up a
dry wash toward the foot of Antelope Mtn. Although
there were numerous relatively flat, open areas we saw
no gopher signs. We did catch one Sceloporus. This road
ended at a large cultivated field in which we searched
in vain for gopher signs. This area is approx. 2.4 mi. N,
0.7 mi. E. Johnstownville, 4300 ± ft.
We returned to the main road, and drove E to
US 395, and then E to the junction of the road to Wendel.
About a mile beyond the junction, toward Wendel
we set traps in a couple of gopher workings. Also got
rid out at two other places between here and Wendel.
Beyond Wendel found nothing although we continued
on for about 3 miles.
We returned to check our sets south of Granite
Valley [crossed out] and caught one T. talpoides
in the mud flats, on the road embankment. We then
returned to McAllister's checking traps along the way.
Catched one Dipus in a gopher trap. At McAllister's
found that of the 9 sets I'd made last evening
