Jun 4 Saw a White-tailed Kite as I crossed Russian River just east of Hopland, Mendocino Co., at about 5:45 PM. Returned at 7:40 PM. One kite appeared over trees along south side of Hayfield, south of Lakeport Road, 2.5 mi E of Hopland (just W of Russian R.). Bird flew west over field, second bird appeared. Both gliding and hovering, Attacked by two Redwings and driven back across field. Both birds perched in trees along west bank of river about 50' apart and 30' up. Male made one pass at female, slow swoop. Then ♀ attempted copulation for about 5 seconds. ♂ accepted-no visible effort made to fly away. ♀ had wings extended but bent back at "wrist," fluttering slightly during attempted copulation. Both flew off; disappearing beyond trees to the south and west. ♂ recognizable because of two inner tail feathers missing. ♀ reappeared briefly, perched in sight for about 5 minutes, disappeared again, not reappearing by 8:07. Both birds sighted again in same general area at 8:15 PM. from [crossed out Lakeport] roadside which parallels the river on the east. Jun 7 Numerous birds seen during the week while working. Brewer Blackbirds common around station Hdqts. One pr. of Black Phakes still with nest first noticed May 17. Calif. Wdphs. abundant everywhere. Brown Towhee [illegible] up around Hdqts.
