June 16
Up at 6 AM. Checked traps at Ferrero Ranch and
took them up. Our total "catch" here amounted
25 gophers. Spent the rest of the day putting up
skins. After supper we drove around in the area
north of town and west of the S. P. railroad tracks.
The land here slopes down to the valley floor.
We introduced our selves to a Dr. Werner
Fletcher Hoyt, a retired M.D. from Berkeley.
He gave us permission to trap gophers on his
land, from which extends from the valley
floor onto the slopes. There are numerous good
alfalfa fields on his land. Since it was late
in the evening we had time to set only a few
traps - I set one near his house, on the valley
floor in alfalfa and two about 1/4 mi to the
north on the slope, also in alfalfa. The latter
place had very hard rocky surface soil that
became softer and less rock at a depth of
about 6 inches. The bottom land soil had few and
smaller rocks and seemed a little softer.
June 17
Up by 7 AM. Checked traps on the Spring Creek Ranch
(the Hoyt place). I had two gophers in two sets but both
were in the same double set. We then continued setting
traps on the Hoyt Ranch. Five doubles and three
