Thaxter 1958 Species Account. Thomomys monticola monticola p.4. June 20 Wagon Camp, 5.8 mi S, 1.0 mi W Mt. Shasta (summit), 5880'ft. (Sikayu Co., Calif.) (T.40N, R.3W sec.8) (see USGS quad. 7 1/2' series - Weed?) This location was verified by a Forest Service location marker found nearby.) The meadow here has many old gopher signs (winter cores and mounds) but recent flooding appears to have wiped out much of the former population of animals. The only gopher signs and the only place I've caught gophers were in those areas around the edges of the meadow in places where no flooding had occurred. The surrounding forest included spruce and DougFir(?). This flooding of the meadow may have caused a higher concentration of gophers around the edge. In one place I caught 3 #2 in three double sets on a job line only 15 yds long. However, the recent gopher signs were fairly scarce. I put out 10 set and 3 hours later had taken six gophers. (nos. 508-13) June 21 (Some locality) My four remaining traps set had one gopher this A.M. (no. 514). All three were short in ventrum or much smaller vagina -- In general this is the way the female reproductive tract looks. The males appeared to be in breeding condition. length of vagina measured between these points
