olines, R. 1959 Gavia stellata 23 June Barrow, Alaska A pair seen So. of the East census area, and no. 1 Wohlschlag Slough 29 June Barrow, Alaska The pair described above was again seen on the same pond. No actual note 5 July Barrow, Alaska This was the most common lon seen out near the point (Pt. Barrow). Probably 50-60 were present with as many as 20 being seen at my time. 7 July Barrow, Alaska A nest was located several hundred yards No. 1 Wohlschlag Slough. It was on the edge of a pond which was about 100 feet long and 20 feet wide at the wider part. The nest was within 6 inches of the edge of the water and consist of a few strands of grass which had been mashed into the mud, forming a sparsely lined mud depression. The eggs were tan color with a few very light brown spot. When the incubator bird was flushed, she paddled off on it

Holman, R. 1959 Gavia stellata 2. 16 July Barrow, Alaska The nest was checked today. The female was incubating upon our approach and flushed when we were about 30 yards away. There were still 2 eggs, but the nest had been built up with a few pine pieces of sedge. Another one was seen several ponds away which may have been the mate of this incubating bird or it had a nest of its own. 18 July Barrow, Alaska One senior loon pond, just so. 1 foot print lake. It has been noticed there several times. Another was seen on the small ponds no. 1 Skua-vit lake. 31 July Barrow, Alaska The next No. 1 Woshlesblog Slough was checked. The eggs had hatched and are chicks were seen in the pond. One adult was also present. 10 August Barrow - Unniat - Pitt Point Alaska Several seen up near on the coastal plain 11 August Pitt Point, Alaska About 30 percent first week of the bear. Both young were covered with dark brown black down and followed closely behind the adult. 30 August Barrow, Alaska During the past week, numerous loons have been noted flying high overhead + could be heard calling. Most were the species. No direction seemed to be predominant; they were seen flying, west, east & north.

A nest could not be found. 12 July Barrow, Alaska Two seen - pond No. of Voty's Slough. 14 July - 2 seen on the creek (slough) behind said logoon. 25 July - Two seen - a small pond, just north of Voty's Marsh - A nest could not be found. 30 August 2 seen on a small pond - located about half way between Dry lake & Lorn Lake. There was 1 young, 25 Aug A lone + 2 chicks seen in a pond just off the beach ridge. The Adult took flight upon our approach + flown while giving a loud screaming cry.

These were still in breeding plumage. 5 August Barrow, Alaska 6 were seen between ARL and The Pass (at Neowok). 10 August Barrow-Umiat-Pit Point, Alaska Several seen when flying over the costal areas. 10 August Pit Point, Alaska About 10 birds were seen west of the shore. These were all together in one flock. 24 August Barrow, Alaska One seen in breeding plumage in Curvate Marsh. 26 August Barrow, Alaska Two adults in breeding plumage seen on middle saltwater lagoon 3 Sept. Barrow, Alaska Two adults in breeding plumage were again seen on middle saltwater lagoon. They have not been noted since 26 Aug.

Holmes, R. 1959 Anser albifrons 8 June Barrow, Alaska Two seen just E. of Barrow Village as they flew from inland towards the sea. 12 June Barrow, Alaska Two seen flying eastward over the drum area at 1830. 5 Sept. Barrow, Alaska 200-250 seen on the lower end of Footprint Lake. These were in small groups 15-20 birds and apparently were feeding among the grasses in the outer portion of the lake. Occasional mixed flock was noted (mixed with Black Brant). Both adults and immatures were present.

Holmes, R. 1959 Branta nigricans 17 June Colville Delta Several groups of 2 to 15 seen in this Col- vile Delta Region. A few were also seen near the Meade River 18 July Barrow, Alaska Two were noted on the small point just nw. of Skovarik Lake. 19 July Barrow, Alaska Two were seen again in the same location as above and a nest was located, on a small island. There were 3 days light tan-colored eggs which were just beginning to pip. The nest was composed of light black (gravel) down in a small depression on an island, 2' by 8'. The pond was about 30 yards long and 8 yards wide. 20 July Barrow, Alaska The nest was checked at 1000. It contained 1 young and 2 pipings eggs. The female sat tight, within 6 feet of her nest. 22 July Barrow, Alaska By 1000, the young had left the nest and could not be found in the pond. The adults were also not seen. 1 August Barrow, Alaska No sign. The birds were seen near the nest.

Barrow, Alaska 8 were present standing along the short / middle saltwater lagoon. 5 Sept. Barrow, Alaska Several small (10-15) flocks were per a footprint lake, with a total of 60-70 birds being present. They seemed to be feeding in the drier parts of the lake bottom, not away. The pros.

Geese. 10 June - 1 seen flying with 7 or 8 Pintail northward over Clam Lagoon & Woks. Slough. Later 2 pair were seen in aggressive action, about 1/3 of the distance between Inam & Woks. Slough. The pair were chasing the other, as if territory had been set up. There was minor loud squawking from both pairs. 14 June - 2 seen in Footprint Lake 20 June - 6 seen over the broad ridge at 0900. 4 pr. seen (cwtv) at 1100. 22 June Ikroavik (Barrow), Alaska Several groups, 1-4-6 noted along its plot. Holmes, R 1960 Branta nigricans 28 June Barrow - Wainright. Barrow, Alaska Several birds seen on flight to Wainright. Most if there were individuals or pairs, while were present in small flocks and pods. 2 July Shranak, Alaska 4 seen flying north over the census plot. 10 seen in the area where they nested last year. 13 July Barrow, Alaska Makers Reynolds report one nest (at least 2 Ads + 2 young per owl nest #12 (yesterday). Today, we went back to this area & saw these 2 adults, but no chicks were seen. At our nest #6, we found a nest 35 feet from the owl mound. The 4 was incredibly when we approached, and it was not until I was only a few feet away from her that she flushed. The young[?] had just finished hatching & which we were near she flew then away slowly.(Note: let's join the group). Both birds stayed with the young after that. The female a form 1 distribution display by bowing her head low in front 1 her body to swag it from side

Holmes, R 1960 Branta nigricans 3. 13 july Barrow, Alaska To side (see maker's movies for definite). The ? would stand erect + the love his head slightly + run <for feet, stand erect again, etc.. After about 5 minutes / movie + Picture taking, the birds had moved about 20 yards. The nest was located on a small mound 35 feet from the old nest. The egg had been laid in a depression where down mixed with grass formed the nest. — Another nest was located just so. 1 Bokgak Slough between old nest #6 + #12. This any hood eggs when seen just pipping (4 had already hatched, 1 hatched while we were there, and I was pipping). The nest was about 25 years from the slough + again was in a depression on a small mound area. The ? was a true nest when first seen, but flushed quickly + flew so-100 yards away. She did a fan The Distracting Display, but it was not a violent one close to the nest on the first sea. It stopped after min.

They flew up on the approach of a Joegar (Pom.) but quickly settled down again. 38 and 29 were noted at 2000 in the same general area. 15 June Barrow, Alaska. One pair seen along the gas well road, just A. 1 Britton's Area. About 22 were seen in the drum area. They would settle down at a Ponds and then fly out-acting very nervous. They were extremely easy to flush. 17 June Pav 2, Alaska Three seen near the landing strip. 22 June Barrow, Alaska Four males were seen chasing one female just So and E. 1 the drum area. The female would fly up to a height of 10 feet and the males would follow her flying back and forth. She would continue to try to get away but was always followed by three males. When she landed they would all lower around her and then flutter a foot or two into the air where she remained sitting.

Barrow, Alaska A nest was located in the area west of the pipeline about 100 yards (due W. 1 A.A.C.S.). It was in a dry polygon which was covered with last year dry brown grass. The nest contained 47 tan or buffy colored eggs. The nest itself was made with down and a few of the grasses. When the female was flushed, she couldn't take off, so she flopped along on the slope toward the lagoon. As she did so, a Pomarine Jaeger swooped at her and hovered just above her. Finally she was able to take off, and he lost his interest and turned away

When the nest was found yesterday, the female had been flushed and the nest was "lift open" (that is the eggs were visible. This time the female was seen down the slope away, and the down had been brought over the eggs, thereby concealing them from any predators. 8 July Barrow, Alaska A group of 15 males were seen near Voth's Area. 13 July Barrow, Alaska The nest was checked at 1500. The female was incubating, and there were still 7 eggs. 17 July Barrow Alaska The nest still contains the 7 eggs. 18 July Barrow Alaska The nest had hatched at 1000 and one three young could be found in the vicinity. They were a light gray color with a white stripe above the eye. The bill was bluish. The female was not seen.

It contained 7 eggs. 28 June Wainright, Alaska A pair seen at Wainright behind the site 29 June Barrow, Alaska A group of 6-8? seen just south of the bleak ridge 11 July The nest on the bleak ridge was checked, and it was still intact. Only 4 feet away from this nest was a nest of an old squaw. Both nests contain 7 eggs. The pintail eggs are slightly lighter in color and are also less greenish. The down of the pintail nests is lighter than the old squaws'. 22 July The nest on the B.R. was again checked, & think it had hatched. There were no signs of the 4-6 young in the area. 2 August A flock of 45 seen on the southern 1 foot print lake. All were 8-9? who were molting their body feathers. Wing molt was not seen.

At the Time the males started a neck-jerk motion when the head was brought back as the body (with beak slightly) pointed up) and then it was jerked forward. Both males did this and the female did it too. These 5 birds flew over to another pad where there was another flock 4. They landed some distance away from the pair and again began feeding. Gradually the five groups came together. The resident male began the head bobbing- or jerking motion. Then short chases began between this resident 3 and the other birds on the pad including the other females. These chases lasted for 2-3 feet and were when the aggressor would possibly float through the water and appear to bite or at least threaten with beak. Meanwhile the aggressor's mate remained feeding, paying no attention to heronate, activity. The other females however,

This motion was seen when the females were sitting in the water and when they were standing in the bank. The female was also seen using this motion several times. After about 10 minutes on this part, two males chased the female off 1st pool with both following in pursuit. They landed on another small pond about 100 yards away. One male finally succeeded in driving the other male off (by short chaser, accompanied with head-bobbing) and the two frogs fed. Only other pond there were seen to repair a pair of females. These lived in two groups away from each other. 7 July Barrow, Alaska One male was seen in the pond at the west edge / The east. census area. No female was seen. Two males were seen at 2130 flyers over freshwater lagoon. They were seen again at 2330 on the pond just west of the lagoon.

Upon our approach, the female sat tight and allowed pickins to be taken at distance of 4-5 feet. She then flushed and settled in the drainage ditch about 40 yards away. The grasses and sedges were overstory above a layer of moss. The second nest was found Hoyars No.1 of the large pond (just so. 1 Tahoma Lake). The female was a light brown and was not heard in the area as was the first female. The nest was a small mound covered with very little grease or sedge being present. There was some willow present near the nest. 18 July Barrow, Alaska The nests were checked during the afternoon and evening. The one near the lake was found to be destroyed, apparently by jaegers. The egg shells and down were thrown over 3 feet from the nest site. At 1430, the first nest (disc. by O'sullivan) was beginning to hatch and the female was very slow in leaving the nest. When we returned at 1900, one young was out and the other were pipping. At this time, the & were extremely reluctant to leave the nest, and finally she picked her up in order to see the young. She then went through somewhat a distraction display, when she fluffed out on the ground with wings outspread at 10 o'clock m.p.m. grounds. When flushed, they flew to a good pond beyond it. It seems that 8? may now be gathering & leaving the 4?. In the evening a pair was seen courting near the south end of the plot. Both the 8? & the 9? were performing the head jerk. The 8?, however, seemed to be going at it more vividly, especially since she had a up/down movement combined with a forward/back motion. Sometimes The female during her violent head jerking would dive on his downward (head) stroke. The male occasionally would put his head from frontward but never a head to the female. Sometimes there period of courtship would last 2-3 minute, and then there followed a period of feeding for 30 seconds to 1 minute before courtship was resumed. Once when the ♀ was in the water, she was following behind the ♂. Suddenly she turned off (90°) and began swimming faster. As she did so, her body was weaving from side To side, and her wings were raised slightly (it seemed to be slightly closed). The tail was raised up to down several times during the performance. Then she began pecking at the vegetative reeds + forced her head to the side - as if she was picking + throwing its gran at her shoulder (I could not determine it this was what she was doing). After about 30 sec., she began to do her violent head jerking action again (both up + down, forward + backward). The 8 in the meantime had moved upwards. The female stood standing there in the upright posture. The 8 then suddenly covered her head, rounded her both feathers and ran towards the 8 (about 15 feet) in a very excited way. The 8 moved quickly both into the pond; The female following. No mammal activities were seen. No vocal accompaniment was heard during the above performance. But there was a strong wind taking any stones away from me. This occurred on a very foggy evening (visibility 200 feet). - Pond - one of sea loagpnds - 50 x 10'. 1 July - The 8+ 8 were present at the pond front of the Warrigan.

In two occasions (one in the morning, one in the evening), Three 8's have been seen with 4, and I have had glimpses of courtship activities. 3 july - A nest was found about 158 yards south of Lon Lake. It contained 2 eggs, which were light, khaki green. The nest was located on a slight mound which was about 8 feet from a small pond (40x60' feet). The nest was exposed and was composed mostly of grass (lying), plus some down. Both 8's were present. 8 july Banow-Shirovilk, Alaska 60-80 seen near Ales. 1 male seen on pond at Skroovik (wanija). 10 july Skroovik, Alaska A nest was found 150 yards east of Wanigan pond near State O.O. One is located on The slope of The ridge (west-expanse) and so in just a small depression. The 4 can be seen from many feet away, and the nest is very exposed. There were 6 eggs. The second nest was about 30 yards away from the 1st located on the edge of a trench across from The weasel mound. It is in among The deep furrows & is fairly well hidden. 14 July Shroawik, Alaska 587 seen near The north slough into the lake. The 9 was still at The nest west / Wanigan pond. 9 stayed there 12 July. 17 July Barrow, Alaska The nest on The west slope of The beach ridge watched this morning. By 1300, The young were following 4 behind The 9. Pictures were taken. The 9 was delicate at the nest near The wanigan. 18 July - A 9 and 5 young seen in a pond, South of Woblesblos Slough. 22 July. The 2nd nest (across from The weasel mound) on The BR was just started to rip this afternoon.

The young were banded. 9 August - A brood of 6 young were caught in our trapline near Salt Logan (line X - stake 9.0-9.4). One & stellar - picked towards him + started to join him, but this only lasted a second or two. He after spends his time sleeping or preening on the bank. 14 July - No sign of the birds have been recon 8 July (when the & was seen). 16 July Barrow Alaska A & + 6 young seen a good bunch of whold selloy Strogh near The Fertilizer plots. 21 July - A brood with young was reported near the main inlet into Shoorl (NE) The wanigan by Henry Brower. 28 July - a & with 5, 1 week-old chicks, was seen near the meadow lakes. Its plumage color was very dark with some gray mottling about the neck and head. A female was also seen in the same locality. 3 Sept. Barrow, Alaska One male in complete eclipse was seen 20 feet fly shore in the Arctic Ocean on front / The base. The bill profile was diagnostic; but otherwise it was brown, barred with black.

Both complete winter and full summer plumage was noted. The birds were moving in all directions which seemed to be a random movement. A group of 20 or 30 would fly to the west and then turn and fly east again. Both 8? & 4? were present 10 June - Barrow, Alaska 42 were seen flying overhead. The were in 1 flock & were flying northward out over Elson Lagoon. 12 June - 2 pr seen on the stream going into salt water lagoon. 13 June - 1 pr. a pond near Britton's Area 14 June - 1 pr. near ridge plot, Iknook 17 June - 1 pr seen courting in The drum area. When first noticed, the birds were flying back and forth over a small (30' x 50') pond. Finally the ? landed on the water, and the ? flew in right behind her and landed about 5' from her. She began swimming, slowly, and the male followed. At several second intervals, the male would throw his head back so that the bird was straight upwards, so that it was vertical with the water. As he did this he gave the loud har-ha-lack'; the little portion being seen when the head was vertical.

He then sped up & tried to climb on the back of the &, but she scooted away. This was attempted several times, and finally, the & took flight, the male followed & the whole procedure started all over again. During the 35 minutes, I watched the pair, over 20 minutes were spent in the air flying back & forth for 200 yards. Once on the water, the & succeeded in landing on the &, and both birds went under water for a fraction of a second. Copulation may have taken place (?). Holmes,R 1959 7 July Barrows, Alaska Pluvialis dominica 2. Four eggs had been laid. The eggs were light green mottled with dark brown or black spots and small blotches? This location matched the locale where the nest was located. This was a high mound (surrounded) of the similar mound) on the north slope of the beach ridge where the soil was black and when it was interspersed with lichens and mosses. One chick was growing a few inches away from the nest but was not close enough to hide the eggs. The eggs and ground are matched so perfectly, it is hard to see the eggs even though you know they are there. When the female bird flushed she moved fly about 10 feet, low over the ground and the assumed posture: Tail lowered and somewhat spread, reversed over. She up-ended, that is the tail end came up and the neck rested on the ground and wings were spread like so: She then flopped in this position for several seconds and at the same time moving several feet. Finally she seemed to give up and assumed a normal posture. This was where she was nearly 70 feet away from me. During this whole performance, various sharp call sights were seen attempting to draw the observer's attention towards the fleeing bird. The mate of the bird did not show up until I was leaving, but he immediately joined the first pair in giving loud sharp call calls as I departed. 10 July Barrow, Alaska 6 seen in a small flock on UOTI's area. 13 July Barrow, Alaska. Holms, R. 1960 2 July Denovik, Alaska Nest #1 still had 3 eggs today. They are tan in color with black spots + small black splotches. Both birds were present at the nest. The & gave a very pronounced move run + became very excited. Even when I was sitting at the nest site taking pictures, she would stand 40 feet away + cock + run a few feet. The move run posture (head down, both feathers cup - tail lowered - giving her a hunched over appearance). The nest is located on the top of a low, high-center polygon among a patch of black moss. The cup is lined with grass + there is no other greenery. Cascade is fairly common around the nest (among the moss). Nest #2 is located in another small, high-center polygon. The nest is a cup or depression in the black green moss at the highest point of the polygon. The cup contains grass, but there is little other grass within 4-5" of the nest. It almost appears that this nest lining may have been gathered &

Holmes, R. 1960 Pluvialis dominica 21 July Skrovaik, Alaska adults were seen, + both did distraction displays. No. 4 (?) was more aggressive however, and would flap flutters be wings and run off in a mouse run when he took feather were semi-erected, tail lowered + slightly spread. Occasionally when she would come in very close, she would spread out with both wings spread horizontally + flush with the ground. The chicks were fair sized and had speckled/green yellow color ~ their backs. Several large flock of birds were seen. These consisted 1 3-6 birds flying a feeding-to- gather. All were molting (or were the parents of the chicks, described above). 22 July Barrow, Alaska The nest - The B.R. (new last year's white-rump nest) was watched when checked this afternoon. Holmes, R. 1961 Pluvialis dominica 3 June Barrow, Alaska A pair noted on the Beach Ridge. One was collected; the other flew off & did not return. 4 June - A pair seen near Voth's area. In the evening a pair was seen just so. of Britten's area. 1 bird (The ? probably) was seen flying high over Pt Hundre in at least 3 instances. The bird flew with deep wing beats going from ~80° to 109° These were deep Sweeping beats, just rather slowly & reminded me of a Sh-and owl in flight. In all cases, the display landed near its mate but no ground ceremony took place. 5 June Several birds seen flying as described above, All birds seen to be paired. 7 June Pairs are seen here there, but they are not Generally Common. 9 June One bird seen flying high (60't), using the Sleazy flight (like a tern - with deep sweeping wing beats) and giving the beep call continuously. Suddenly he landed near a pair of plovers & raised both wings in the vertical position & gave the de-de-delep Call 3-4 times. The pr. then took flight & The displaying bird followed behind in a mild chase. The ptpl. landed about 200 yds away right from wing up while the pair flew on. - see Ikrovide census sheets.

When first seen, it was Thought that two B5 were having a bouncy dispute, with much chasing going on. Then when I D scouted The other flew with a Third bird, The 4 pursuer & began to give her The very fast + then I thought - or attempt at copulation. The other interrupted, however, & flew up & almost out - The chase lasted for a minute - then 3 finally the pursued flew off to the E. - The pursuer came back & settled near The Q. - Possibly B5 are in short supply? 24 June Numerous pair seen along the west slope of the BP & south of Wohlschlag Slough. 1 Nest was located 1824 as said (N°), on the trail & Schultz's plot - 4 eggs were present, The I went at a very poor dischother display with tail lowered & widely fanned, hindered birds, with precarious flutter & spreading both wings diagonally & the fluttering on the ground. This was The most violent display that I have seen from a ptaveer this year.

None seen in a trip over to Eben Lagoon & North along Wolfschloß Slough. The bird was on our nest, just so. At the slough - the 4 eggs were not hatching yet. This was the only bird seen all day - none occurred Central marsh. 10 July Flock of 6 seen No of Ooths; Area - Feeder in the low polygon troughs. 13 July Hark 1 10 at 5.30, 1 Wohl - when it met Eben. Some were working and flew off in 1 flock. Another 6 were seen near origin. The nest just so. 1 The slough was poor - probably hotbeds At 9 was seen nearby (200 yds.) who showed signs of having gone. Bird I saw none. This is the first bird to show this behavior - the remainder this year have shown no concern. Another flock of 6 was seen West Pools Slough, 15 July Flock of 15 so. 1 The inset plot. Finally - both ran - or 10' or so behind the & - one who was running with head down - as if heading for a nest. Finally she stopped - apparently in a cup - 1 egg in the above nest (at 1500) pair nearby. 21 June Several pairs - Strovail census plots - one pair still copulating. Birds were not very broody & would not return to nest. 25 June Nest on B. P. - with 4 eggs 27 June 3 Nests found on Strovail Census plots - all with 4 eggs - & all were incubating in all cases. 29 June Two nests located - 1 at the south end (in DN) with 4 eggs (stowed); one So. 1 (Wortham) (in the south bay) with 3 eggs (strikes) 2 July Two out of three nests on the plot (Strovail) were still present & incubating. The 3rd (near 15.4) was gone; there was no sign of the points. 3 July Stock of 13+ No. of meadows lake - all feeding together - several showing signs of molt. As it passed over a Mini-polarized Sandpiper Territory it was chased by Thes birds for about 30 yards. The wil- deer continued going while the sandpipo returned. 27 June Barrow, Alaska One searod collected fruit east (The AACS behind A.P.L. It was a female with extrord small ave (up to 1mm) and a minute underes. Evidently it was a young bird. 6 July Barrow, Alaska Two birds seen at the SE come of the drum area just sw of freshwater lagoon. They were feeding actively. One bird was molting, as several feathers were missing from the wings. 10 July, Barrow, Alaska One heard near AACS during the afternoon. 5 August Barrow, Alaska Two seen just So 1 freshwater lagoon.

Holmes, R. 1959 Arenaria interprrs 5 June Band Area, A.R.L. Barrow, Alaska. Weather overcast, lightsouth + SE wind. Several seen during the day in this location - mostly in groups of 2-3. Occasionally some aggressiveness was noted as 1 individual would chose another 6 June Barrow, Alaska. These birds are present in small numbers and can be seen on the exposed tundra in groups of 2-3. 9 June Barrow, Alaska One individual seen feeding in The drum area. 10 June Barrow, Alaska A pair (?) Seen near the gravel road feeding. No aggressive or display behavior was noted. 12 June Barrow, Alaska One pair seen near the drum area. They were sitting on a patch of exposed gravel and allowed me to approach within ~10 feet before they flew. After resting for several times, they settled about 15 feet away from the original place.

Holmes, R. 1959 2. Avenaria interpres 13 June Barrow, Alaska 2 pair seen along the gravel area near the dump (behind the house). One pair flew off to another gravel area about 50 yards away, but the other pair seemed reluctant to move and when they finally flushed, they returned to the same area. A few minutes later a lone individual tried to join these 2 and was driven out by apparently the male of the pair. This was accomplished by a chase for about 30 yards. The male returned to the female. 15 June Barrow, Alaska At least two pairs were still in the same location. No interspecific stuff was observed today. Both pairs seemed to become very excited when the observer approached the area. 18 June Barrow, Alaska. Several pairs spent the stationary around the stream area and also near the dump. Several chases were noted among members of a pair and among one member and an outsider. The territorial boundaries could have been established.

25 June, Barrow, Alaska A nest was discovered at 0930 with three green eggs blotched with brown. It was located in the middle of some weasel tracks. At 1615 the nest contained four eggs. It is located about 150 yards east of the AACS. There was no wing display given when the nest was found or when it was rewilded. 5 July, Barrow, Alaska. The above nest was checked today, and the bird was still incubating despite the disturbance she her bed with all the traffic. When flushed, she did a type of mouse run which differs from that I saw in the sandpipers. She crowded, but held wings in position and just barely ruffled her back feather. This posture was only used for a short distance (6 or 8 feet) from the nest, at which she assumed her normal position.

Holmes, R. 1966 31 May Barrow, Alaska A pair was seen during the morning and evening near the shore / Elson Logan, south / Wohl. Slough. 1 June Barrow, Alaska Two seen just south / Wohl slough along Elson logan. Their primary activity seemed to be feeding. 2 June Barrow, Alaska Two were seen near VOA's Area. They would feed for awhile, then one would chase the other for several seconds, after which both would resume feeding. During the chase a gurgling rattle-type note was given by both birds. One another individual was heard about 100 yards away, but the first two paid him no attention. The two did not seem to be settled, leaving the fly off south westerly after a few minutes. While they were feeding, it was noted that they fed in the typical Turnstone manner; that is they would work around flipping over mussels / dead grass, snail twigs, etc. + look for food particles. Shortly, BOTH birds chased a pomarine jaeger for about 100 yds before the jaeger maneuvered and flew off. A few seconds later, 1/2 The birds chased another jaeger During both actions, a guttural rattle was given rapidly. 16 June - A pair seen chasing jaegers again to the Elson Lagoon area, & 1 bird seen feeding near Britain's Area. 12 June - A pair seen near Voth's Area. 13 June - The pr. near Voth's were watching when there was a nest nearby. BOTH birds were chasing the jaegers, but me acted like I was concerned about a nest. 26 June: A nest was found near the buildings at A.A.C.S. No chasing or courtship was noted. 5 june A pair seen attempting copulation - near the edge of Elson Lagoon. The ? freeded the ? for nearly a minute, but contact was not made. The ? seemed to shuffle her feet while the ? stood on her back, but was unable to keep his balance. After break off, both turns resumed feeding. 7 june Two pairs seen near Britton's area. 8 june - Pair seen attempting copulation east of Britton's Area. The ? was feeding. The ? flew up & landed next to her. She turned, he jumped in the air, landed on her back & stood there, balancing himself with outstretched wings. It could not be determined if the attempt was successful. 17 june - An excited pair seen in Debeourndy r - a Pitelka's Plat - apparent nest was near. 24 june 1 saw south / luske slough. - feeding. in mossy edge habitat for pecking at the surface. $ july The pair still seen near Petroleum on FAP's plot - They became very excited & start calling like ah, whit da, whit da, chee, chee, che. There were n groups of 2, 3, + 4. 2's or most common - I may have been paired birds. The rattling gurgled call note was heard from 1 bird on the ground + one flying off after being disturbed. 30 may Several seen along the bluffs west of Elson Lagoon - There was a considerable amount of chasing - apparently between ST. 2 or more - an aggressive act was seen when 1 bird assumed a hunched or posture - with head forward + tail depressed + slightly spread - The bird also crouched then [illegible] towards the bird which had just landed nearby. Holmes,R. 1963 Calidris canatus 13 June Ogstoral Creek, Cape Thompson, Alaska Worked a upper slope / ridge near last / Crowbill Mtn (foot feet), 1 mile N.W. of Ogstoral Creek. The ridges which run inland from the coast and roughly parallel the stream- are capped / small possum / Shob - cover with a low-lying Dryas & Salix. Small Swards / tall & Thuiler-growing grasses are found in the hollows & saddles between hills. These are at an elevat / 480-600 feet. First bird encountered was feeding in company with a Golden Plover - both birds kept never up hill & finally disappeared over the crest to the south-west. Feeding was done from the surface by picking. No probe or jab were made. The bare area was a Grassy-clumps, interspersed with small patches (1-4') of gravel-moss-lichen. Upon walking further downhill, we flushed a bird from a nest, containing four fresh (within the 1-2 days-old) eggs. The egg had a green-gray background - with brown splotches, which even large & more irregular in shape at the large end of the egg. The nest cup was lined with white lichen, which had obviously been "arranged" and placed in a small depression. Location (Nest - not facing slope) 130° - mostly stone (½-1") rocks & pebble

Demubating bird fluttered off Nest - tail spreadt depressed, wings stretchedout In the side +fluttering & shuffled off on the Ground in unusual starbird distraction display - it also gave a plaintive war- similar to quail. The bird sat in a similar distraction situation. Once, 100' away from nest, it would crowd down in a snowdrift, fluff it's feathers into the snow, set one for sec. seconds - (wings folded toward me as would put bill under scapulars (displacement) - & then move a few feet and start again. Several distraction displays were seen. - all followed this pattern, except at a low-intensity. The bird often shuffled its foot +scapular feathers - chipped some + performed the recent one - accompanied with sharp-pitched squealing sounds. Holmes, P. 1963 C. canater 13 june Ogotobuk Creek, Cape Thompson, Alaska Once the bird forwent circling around us in an arrow flight, glided a outstretched (horizatal a slight down-curve) weip, gave a sequence 3-4 double noted "naze" ? whistled notes, then landed. Found 3 birds further north toward the westward - It a mile to the south-west clear the ridge - In holotax similar to that described above - except the sleeps were steeper (45-55°). In flight - no quivering wing display - The bird flew fast a rapidly beating wings (full strokes) + sometimes glided a outstretched (usually down-curved) weip for distance 25-30 feet just before landing. During the glide, it gave 4-10 sequences of its whistled double-note call, ended with a slower rendition the same note but the last phrase was drawn out It ended in a whay-note similar to that of the Curlew Sandpiper. The fast whistled phrase (twe-twee) was given 4-10x. This was followed by one-10 slow-phrases. Case 2: The slow phrases were given first The few (#?) fast phrases - followed by 1 slow phrase The alarm note - as mentioned before - was a fort wha-wak-wak - or an emphatic - wha-ack - who-welz, wha-ack This song was given in flight and usually just prior to landing. One - flight a shallow arc was noted when the song was given - but there was no hovering or quivering wings. When landing, the singer would glide into the level and outstretched, down-curved wings - alight, keep down wings at the vertical for ½ second - before lowering them into mand folded position. Holmes,R 1963 C. canatus 14 June Opotruk Creek, Cape Thompson, Alaska displays were heard from the bird very irregularly. Each time - from different direction - so that he seemed to be flying long distances (undetected by us for the most part) - at least half to one quarter of a mile. No other birds were seen this morning. On one flight - when the bird flew down the steep slope - he was flying rapidly & given the song at the same time - so that it is not given for a bird circling, I mean. Actually, mostly the songs heard seemed to have come from birds in swift flight - low over the ground. On 2 or 3 occasions, the birds flew several hundred feet off the ground, with a slower beat as they swept to the left, then swiftly off - out of sight. The song was heard from the bird down the left flight. [Summary] flight display - low & slow - repeated beats - wing sweeps - wing beats - low above the ground - a slower warp - but no hovering - a general warp as it appears, etc. - song not given.

Two BB incubated + participated in nest care, etc. It also gave the war, war note + a short portion of the whistling song - see earlier note. 23 June One bird flushed from polygon area near Elson Lagoon (Unlucky Sky-display area). It gave several war, war notes + flew towards the beach ridge. Circled around, sevent times + then glided onto a landing perhaps a hundred yards from nest (the way). This flight was large - at 2-300' two fast flying - short for brief glide - when the bird banked & changed direction. The bird was a female. 11 June Barrow, Alaska One seen flying westward through the drum area. 13 June Barrow, Alaska A pair seen along the beach ridge road. 19 June Barrow, Alaska One seen performing the mouse run just S. of the drum area. It flushed after 15 feet and flew W. in an easterly direction. Never found. 25 June Barrow, Alaska Three birds were seen in the flat marshy tundra between the beach ridge and Elson Lagoon. Two seemed to be paired, as one was close by. The paired male was displaying (annually) from 1400 to 1600 (the time we spent in the area). The display is a typical Erolia-type. The bird flies into the air to a height of 30-40 feet and hovers there an [illegible]

25 June. Barrow, Alaska outstretched wings. The note of the sandpiper, however, differs decidedly from the other earlier, in that it is a deep and hoarser note (crawww- crawww....). It is followed by the same type trill as the Red-hawk has when the day's is over, but here again it is on a lower scale. Once the bird was seen to land, walk a few feet and then fly off again and this then he uttered a nasal quaw some time and this sped up as it was given and finally was turned into the hoarse crawww.... described above. This low rolling accelerating nasal note was also given during the chase when the third bird was forced to leave the area. 28 August, Barrow, Alaska. Two immature seen feeding along Kheowat Lagoon, adults were co-located. 31 August. Barrow, Alaska Three immature seen along the shore of middle saltwater Lagoon.

Holmes, R. 1961 Crocethia alba 3 June Barrow, Alaska Two birds seen feeding within 30 feet of each other; one being in the company of 2 Dunlins. When this one was collected, the other flew around excitedly & gave a call note which was near tone. This was a rather deep chuga, chuga, chuga...., repeated rapidly as the bird flew around me for several seconds. This apparently is an alarm call which must not be given on the working grounds. 5 June - 11 birds seen along the edge, 1 Olser logan. All were feeding together. The polygon tops when flushed would fly up together & land a few hundred yards away. Some were in a good reddish plumage about the neck & throat, while others appeared quite light in color. One had a very silvery back - as if the molt had barely begun. These were collected. 7 June - a pair (or at least 2 birds together) were seen feeding near Olser logan (Soyars inland). It is surprising to find that so much (The white plumage is maintained into summer. The back of some individuals is literally spotted - except 50% with gray wedge feather. Holmes, R. 1961 Croethia alba 7 June Barrow, Alaska stating. The birds collected have been fat & an apparently still migrating. 15 June 1 bird collected, just Mr. T. I. T. A. B. After minutes later, a part (?) was seen further nearby. Two were left - on the clams. They might be breeding. 17 June Two pair of Sanderlings seen in area described above. The note given - Flight - a chug, chug....... - different from any other peep & not heard from wandering birds. The alarm note is, a house, Thrush croak - much lower in pitch & more grating than the RB. The bill was not heard. Once when the 2 birds landed, we assumed the mouse- run posture, ran over to a depression & settled in - it appeared to shuffle-tooth forth - forcing the breast into the ground - lean the tail projecting up at a 50° L. After several seconds, it flew off in chord The other bird. The depression cover not be found oftener - so maybe this is part I courtship - active. Seen in Bard-Hemi pair - where the displaying male went through the saw procedure.

The 2 birds in the vicinity are perpendicular To the road when 1 displacer in good breeding plumage : The other was a very whitish underside and rose / red crown & a marked back. The displaying bird was feeding - small patches of grass from it. Then - It would go into display flight (south for less than 10') + give the deep Nah, nah, nah. Then land - resume feeding. No winging behavior was noted. Several times, it displayed for a minute or two - about 8-12' above the ground- with extended & rapidly quivering wings. (It) Tail was slightly spread & it would be carried by the wind for that distance while in the pasture, before returning to a more direct course. Holmes,R 1962 Croce mia alba 4 June Eernow, Alaska (shorter version) The aerial call (about the same quality). It was given about 10x every 2 seconds. - See tape recording. After it had been in the cup for about 15 minutes it got up well away stepsides, in the hunched posture - pecking here & there & then when about 10' away - straightening up & feeling a more normal way. About 15 mi. lab it made its way back to the nest & repeated the nest scouring - short sequence pecking vegetation. During our 1 hour performance, the 2 were feeding (or at least pecking) within 10' of the cup - seeming to pay no attention. No aerial display was recorded during the morning - I kept pishing while the 2 one flew about 15' & 30' - short sequence aerial display noted. When I returned at 1320 - No two birds were feeding near the wood - The 2 was in the hunched posture about 2' from the 2. Due to heavy vehicular traffic in the area, I had to move on - when I returned half an hour later - neither bird was seen. One other individual was seen about ½ mi south of British Area (distinctively marked - deep red breast)

Then at 1530 - The pair near Brittan's Area were found 100 yds west / Uph road & about 188 yards. SAW the previous location next cup - where all the Observations were made yesterday. The seemed to be the same pair - seen the ? was quite light - the male being darker (redder). When I first saw the ? was in the hunched over - ruffled posture - feeding. He then walked to the top of a polygon - 3 feet from an old + worn down gravel road & sat into a cavity - tail up high & he worked both legs forth as he pressed his breast into the ground. Holmes 1962 Crocephia alba 5 June Barrow, Alaska yesterday. No dust The fid toward the north - Dr B usually is his hunched posture. When I checked The Spot when Dr B had sat - no distinct cavity could be found - but only a shallow depression (i.e no lining). The site of this was very similar to the 1st cup found yesterday. Both a Polyza tops - new gravel beds - + both were very exposed - with very little vegetation. Apparently - This act (The B sitting in cavity is part 1 The courtship ceremony. Holmes,R. 1962 CrocePha alba June Barrow, Alaska #1 was checked - it has not changed since it was first located - lone lichen fragments in bottom - grassy material around sides #2. Today - an actual cup was present - a lightish gray mossy low polygon - over old gravel road. The edges of the cup were lined with mostly old grass (gray in color - some brown - but matched background quite well). The bottom was covered over - solid layer / Cladonia which seemed to be packed down - This is the mat well-made cup / De Pree. 8 June Bird not seen Britton's Ave - but were not really looked for. Two birds seen chasing flying south over panel ridge [hoofway] between Britton's + Voth's Aves. 9 June The entire afternoon evening ever spent in around Britton's Ave - no sign / 1 pair was noted. One displaying bird was found - between panel ridge & the vei crops. 10 June 3 birds seen feeding at the NNE edge / Deppard Pond - one bird was hunched - as seen above + violently chasing one individual away - while admirably displaying to the other - usually not causing it to move. Holmes,R 1962 CroceThia alba 10june Barnas, Alaska Anoth (dark) individual was seen on the north slope of bundle ridge - in the gravel with Roda - The fleet least proximity of salt lagoon. 17 june On or No.1 Gasoline Bridge near Gasoline - no bird polygons - none displaying. 26 june 3 birds seen on the south side of The Beach Ridge - along the north west shore of No. Meadow lake There appeared to be a pair & a single 8 - all of which were involved in a chase - [as well as a ♂ Culex Solf] - all 4 birds flying erratically over the hundred foot over the lake. The Culex Sanctipia was giving The fourth note - The Sandgrouse [both 8's? - but at least one 8) was giving an aggressive chase note - which is a rattle - given at varying speeds - depending on the interest & the aggressive situation. This egg chase note [illegible] is usually uttered at a relatively slow tempo - 2 parts/sec. che-che-che- + when this is speeded up - the parts are slurred together giving an impression of the gurgling rattle of melanotus. The pattern 1 The two notes are nearly identical. That of melanotus is more bubbles & gurgles while that of alba is more "wiry" & "strained". Both are louder chattered.

It is usually given when the wing is in chase or occasionally on the ground - prior to chase flight (e.g., a song (Pectoral's Head).) The bird watched was displaying an area - clocked - below - but always No. Muddar Lake p1. Beach Ridge returned to the disliked area. The pair was seen farther west, however during chasing - all other birds were flying over the entire area. Holmes, R. 1939 Ereunetis pusillus 12 June Barrow, Alaska over the tundra in and near the drum area. A pair would race back and forth and then settle down on a small exposed patch of tundra. They were not always noted using the vertical wing landing display, but it was noted several times. During the flight display, they may stay at a height of 20 to 30 feet and never in one spot for several seconds, the float for a second - two and then hover again. At the end of the display, they glide at an angle towards the ground and alight with up-held wings. The wings are then slowly pulled down into normal position. During this gliding the wings are held at a slight angle. Both the chase and the flight display are accompanied by the constant chattering note. The Tail was dropped all spread, The back feathers raised, but The wings were not dropping. It uttered a call which was not the wheezy band-like call, but a thin note which varied a pitch. It was given for several seconds at a time. She was highly disturbed and followed me for about a hundred yards before she started back towards the nest. The aerial display was heard 2 or 3 times near the pool and 1 the drum area. 8 July Barrow, Alaska The nest was checked at 1930. The eggs had hatched and the young, all mottled gray, white and black, were present at the next site. The adults became very excited and approached and flew around, bordering a few feet away, giving the alarm note.

They ranged in size from 6-20 birds per group were abundant throughout the lake bottom. The main activity was feeding; however, many groups were acting like clumps of grass, probably to get out of the wind. 7 August Barrow, Alaska Again, many birds were seen on Footprint lake. They were estimated to be about equal in numbers to the Pintails - about 600 birds if both species being present ~ north slope and about 400 each at the lake. Considering that very few have been seen in this area for two weeks, these birds must be on the move (when?). Large groups were observed over Woolsledog Slough and along the west edge of Freshwater Lagoon. The birds were feeding, arriving and would not flush until approached within 6 feet.

Holmes, R. 1960 2. Eremetes pusillus 16 June Barrow, Alaska Two birds were seen chacing around the beach ridge. Finally one stopped, and the other came in next to it and landed. Then one stood up straight with head stretched upward, tail down in normal position and wings dropped. The other hunched over + seemed to be the aggressor one, for it tried to peck at the upright bird who did not fight back. During this pecking, the upright bird remained motionless but alert. After sec. seconds, the aggressive bird flew off, and the "upright" bird resumed its normal position + began feeding. At first, I believed this was a territorial encounter, but the more I watched it, the more it seemed like some kind of pair behaviour. 19 June - I saw the bird displaying along the beach ridge. 23 June Ikrovile (Barrow), Alaska I heard displaying east of the plot near the Short Lake (Ikrovile). No others have been seen a feed in the region during the last 2 days.

The bird was incubating. 21 July - A brood of at least 3 young were found today along the edge of Vater Creek near the stock. The chicks were at least 3 or 4 days old. Both adults were present and excited but only the 4 gave the distraction display. They continuous flew around giving The trill call (swo - swoo phoo- just when short sequence for their aerial display). 29 July - Now have been seen during the last week, except for an occasional adult feeding along first waters lagoon. Today, I was collected east of The Beach ridge. It was excited as it it had young around- but none could be found. This bird gave a short series of the regular Ariste trill or a disturbance note. 30 July - 1 juvenile + 2 adults seen across from First lagoon, Tegley in the ponds there. The juvenile was almost flighty.

Holmes R. 1961 Encounters passerines 3. 7 June Barrow, Alaska The display seen again near Voth's area. The birds were 1st noticed in a territorial pursuit, where 2 birds were chasing a third. The indiv then veered off + The other two kept together + finally landed. The 8 went into the posture described yesterday with Tail cocked + wings spread at a great then horizontal L. The 4 then took flight, the 8 following close behind as they darted forth. The 8 would set his wings at 20 above the horizontal + glide for a short time. He would fly a glide just behind (usually slightly below) the 4. All this activity was accompanied by a quiver-like trill, similar to the aerial song. The bull was given in short phrases of 2-10 sec. duration. Whenever the birds landed, the 8 went into posture. On 2 such cases, he did not have time to raise his wings (just tail was cocked) before the 4 took flight. He would fly 30 to 200' land + then take off The air again after a few seconds. This went on for up to 2 min. - before they flew out of sight. The head & is held up at about a 45° L + not horizontal while in the air. 8 June - Two birds seem displaying aerially. They came close together + it looked like a chase would ensue. One followed the other + they both landed. One went into the courtship

The pair walked up to the site. One bird cocked its tail & walked into the cup, sat & began to scrape & compress the sod & vegetation with the same type movements as described for Bairdi (8 June). He also picked pieces of grass & three then on his shoulder into the cup & pressed them down. No foot stomping was noted however. There was quite a bit of shuffling - the bird wriggled around in the cavity. The site was marked will be revisited. (at warmer build an finer suite - cast 1 Vth's area). 1 June These birds were very common - in the Drummane & west towards the family lagoon. There was much chasing going on. A shot chase would end with the bird mid-sectin warp a V shape & slide down into the ground.

Some aggressive activity was noted between indiv. (The species with mauri juv's.) This consisted of short chase with head lowered forward, wings stretched out. The second along snow patch - 10' - dia - when 5 birds (3 pus., 2 mauri) were spread out. Whenever 2 came into contact, they would assume posture to drive one the other out. Birds were doing short (2 min) aerial display & some chasing was noted. 1 june 2 displaying birds seen on the bluth east of Voth area. When chasing - a bird would set its wings & glide swiftly at the bird - while giving a loud musical chatter. The other bird would fly up off of it (already flying) & the display was swoop by it again. 2 june 2 see near Voth area & lower On Hais area 3 june 1 near Elson Bluffs 4 june Several pairs individuals were seen along the Voth Road (on both side & on the bluffs bordering Voth Creek - east & so. ) at mid-mid-site. The behavior was giving the chatter trial (again not a clear distinct "motor"). - There is none of a purely silly case - when is given as an introduction to the aerial display & preliminary to the "motor-cycle"? [illegible] In this posture - it moved toward the feeder ? (who paid no attention) in a swaying fashion - probably moving 30° to left side & then back again. All the while the bill was being given. Finally The birds who had previously been chased - finished displaying & returned. As aerial courtship flight (a low flying - erratic chase) ends - the ♂ lands near the ♀ with both wings held at 60° angle, tail cocked - not fanned, head forward + begins to run at or after the ♀. The ♀ is given the field all the time if the ♂ flies a short distance, he will fly after her - frequently with stallors - vibrating wing beat - lands again - the courtship posture. As he walks or runs behind the ♀ - the whole bird sways or swaggers from side to side - making it quite noticeable to an observer - any other bird nearby (don't tell likely!) Once when they landed after one flight, the ♂ folded his wings in normal position - but tail remained cocked - head was held - half-high. Holmes R 1962 7 june Barrow, Alaska a few inches to the side. After moving about 6 feet - the bird stepped into the cup & stood there for a moment - started picking grass from nearby & tossing it over his right "shoulder". This was done several times - the bird stood up, stepped out of the cup - & walked away - not stopping - then moved about a foot away - before feeding. The bird stood several inches from the depresssion; continuing to pick at the grass & throw it in the direction I threw up (i.e. the grass was not held until the bird had turned all the way so that the piece of grass went off to the side). Then a display flew in the direction - the bird near me flew up - gave an aerial display - chased the other bird away. The cup located opposite The Mire set / antennae / The musk site (NE 1/4th) - was 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" - bare in the bottom - with only a few roots & dark soil. No living was present at the edge - perhaps the throwing action was more a courtship ritual than a male / male protest.

With much chasing going on. The birds give a trill seeeeeeee - for short periods on the ground - They may end then - it may turn into the motor call. The speed wheel, however, is not given for more than 3 sec on the ground. In the air they quarter down curved ways - sometimes starting with the trill - followed by the motor call - then given the trill upon landing. And I have congruent on the left out. Often the aerial display is interrupted by a chase or another bird displaying nearby. The 1st bird will settle every at a 45° V - angle in swiftly & evocatively - giving the trill.- Once when 3 birds landed - 2 went into what I have been calling "courtship" posture - head fanned, tail cocked, wings held down + among a dull & varied trill calls. Holmes, R. 1963 Calidni pusillus 27 may Barrow, Alaska Two seen on Elm bluff, near Whiteblog. BRN spent most time in feeding, but one (♂) followed the other, keeping 3-4 feet behind. As he came close to the ♀, he would cock his tail to 60° L & start giving the mob-taunt Call (which lasted for 2-4 seconds - only). One, he lifted both wings 60°L & giving me (tail raised) Full worked up to the ♀, who immediately ran off feeding. Twice, the ♂ lifted one wing (both times, it was the left) & turned the ♂ - even though he was 3' away), and washed parallel to her - she again ran off feeding. The pair was collected several minutes later. The ♀ White feeding was seen to find 2 triptiled larvae which she picked up a bit well & ran several feet (away from the ♂ - who moved along behind her) before she swallowed them. Have never seen this before - usually the items are taken in at once. Above 2 were ♂♂ - see #1961 r1962. Holmes, R. 1963 C. pusillus 2. 28 May Barrow, Alaska Two seen in the drum area near the radar shack. I was walking across snow field toward a hummock (expends) when I saw stood. Tremendous snow cochleal tail raised one wing (whole face in the snow - next forward to known) to go 10 sec. The drill. And, he raised both wings to 75°, half cocked, gave motorboat song for 15 sec - all in while walking. Suddenly it took flight - low over the ground - with wings at 45° - you shot the bird landed on the snow. From a 8' pectual closer and the displays at N end 9 The above sequence - but both eventually landed me and other sedge feeding. 4 June Overhead displaying in drum area 5 June Britton's Area - at least two displaying Sound towers - I chase between them notice - The aggressor gave a harsh dry chatter (or unembodied) which was lower in pitch than the aerial churning. Holmes,R 1964 C. pusillus 4 June Barrow, Alaska Several in drum area - were chasing, accompanied chatter, only 1 aerial "motorboat" song was heard. 5 June 2 chasing in Britton's Area. 6 June 2 chasing in AACS area - on flat tump at [illegible] the (welded, folded wings normally - No landing display / in air it had been flying an upright, long sssssssssss. One - Reprods it ran a few steps, assumed a "scraping posture" with tail at 45-60° (higher than RBS in equivalent posture), body tipped forward [illegible] - I could be a contour, but soft motor boat a content flier from the individual. The other bird which had been nearly reached over to clump also disappeared from view. Then, 20 sec. later, both flew off. On inspection I screwer, I found it to be located in a dune clump / Arctogritis on a ledge. Low polygon - cappilous serpul clump [illegible] (except 3 pterostichus lears - In North was block-sod = earth. Later I next found - east with 4 eggs - Nenbut I saw was in a low polyg - void scattered grass- sedge cover - nest was lined with grass blocks, set. pieces / lichens. Nest corn - about 60%. Incubation And did not give a distraction display but stayed in close giving a short (2-3 sec) chath - trill - crooped 18-10 notes, given in rapid succession [ch-ch-ch...]- number = quality. Holmes,R. 1960 Erculets mauri 12 Aug Barrow, Alaska A group / 6 seen in Central marsh; I was collected by Mabel 13 Aug Three more were collected today. They all appear to be juveniles & differ from puzetos by a buffy breast band and much darker red on the back. Of course, the bell is also large - which is most distinctive. 14 Aug 2 seen today. The birds have been sticking to the region of the marsh which is adjacent to the east arm and in the corner of the marsh 16 Aug Iperwile Lake - Alaska In the island in the middle / The Lake (island from Cape Lisburne), I noted 2 Ad's + 2 immatures Feeding among the Prolongant Red-bats 25 Aug Barrow, Alaska Two seen in the ponds near Freshwater Lagoon. (Collected by P. / Ellis) 26 Aug -1 present in the above location. Lined among the phtholongs along the shore of the pond. 3 Sept I collected along both Creek, So. A familiar Lagoon.

In processing specimens, 1st yr birds were distinguishable from older birds. These 1st yrs - showed a streaked throat with The the Δ-triangles patchwearer - A Ad. Their covert were worn - f Generally they lacked The spots in the flanks. The feathers at the back / The neck showed what appeared To be juvenile feathers - was less This wrong feather - not well divided - blue. Then 1st yr birds had broad Patchw. 22 July - see E. pusilla 30 July Barrow, Alaska See jun. fem - call. nec Nunook (N. Bivinich) - seen with juv. E. pusilla, 1Ao - 1st yr was coet. - The same area. 2 Aug These outnumbered pusillus - in gravel area No. 1 Brittan's Area. - 30 jun maurii to 10 jun. pusillus. All on Seeding - no aggression. 1 mauri coet.

Holmes, R 1962 Exunetes mauri 26 July Barrow, Alaska One adult + 3 juveniles seen at Britton's Gravel Ponds - The group stayed together- Probably a family group. The adult + The juvenile were collected. 1 Aug 8 immatures - No Gravel Ponds near Britton's Area. 3 Aug 60-70 immatures along the edge of Fresh Lake - Feeding in the shallow water or on the gravel. They were scattered along over 2-3 feet. 5 Aug 15-20 along Fresh Lake - 4 on the north end + 1 central marsh, 6-10 near Grant Point + 4-6 along the south shore airport lagoon. These are conservative numbers- some birds were flushed all along the route travelled. 6 Aug Again surprisingly large number were encountered today - 20-30 along Fresh Lake - Scattered 2+3s between The Wessel Creek postline wade + near swet polygon area south / postline R. - Several near the Pool +5 - in Principal area. - All immatures 13 Aug 8-10 immatures at Britton's Gravel Ponds. 14 Aug This was the most abundant species present at Britton's Gravel Ponds - 30-40 immatures several along Fresh Lake.

Holmes, R, 1962 Ereuncks mauri 15 Aug Barrow, Alaska 6 along Fick Lake - now seen the funds. 16 Aug 3 in Britton's Gravel Area - group 18-10 along So. Sail Logan - one feeding in Deeper mud - about 5' apart. Two chases were seen - when the aggressor would lower his head + charge The other bird - which would flitte or run off - but birds would then resume feeding. All now feeding out in my water - Deeper mud-sand - feeding by picking. 17 Aug Immature seen at edge of Fick Lake (3), No. Salt Lagoons (200+), & East Lagoons (15) + scattered individuals in central marsh & east side of Bear Ridge. Swell collected - showed no evidence of gat. jun. moist. 19 Aug 60-80 immature along pond edge - On the ponds toward De Point. 20 Aug One imm. along Von Auck nest cabaret site. 23 Aug 4 seen in Britton's Gravel Area. 25 Aug 4 imm. on Deport's toward De Point

Holmes,R 1963 L. mauri 22 jim Banow, Alaska Located at least 2 birds on beach ridge. One did an aerial display - hovering in outstretched, quivering wings - at 15' above ground. The bird rose fell ±1 foot while it gave to song. The song has a buzzy flat tone, almost shrill quality & very roughly can be characterized in the following way. eh-eh-eh-eeh-cheer-Yer za - za - za - The cheer component is the most distinct shrill section & drawn out in time. After landing the bird fed along the ridge fip & while doing so, was chased 3X by a semi-pel - who would land nearby, raise its wing & shifty run it tail above its hyperrubul & then dash at the WS - who would run a few steps - would fly short feet & land. The next - 3X - the birds flew off with SB chasing the WS & giving its shrilled call note. After flying 10', the SB turned over, gave a brief aerial display from a perched spot. The WS then returned behind (Phalae) Red B (located in Reserve)

Holmes, 1963 22 Jun Barrow, Alaska area where he had before resumed his feeding. No further interactions were noted. The call noted 1 The WS was a partly hued prit, not too difficult for that 1 bruidii. It [illegible] minutes later, Dec? While was the individual involved - the chasing - Jacqueline. He was flushed from not solace continued 2 eggs. The egg were light green in background color with very heavy Splotched reddish-brown color - large end became smaller toward the pointed end. The next was on the east side the ridge, 50' from the crest - a c slope? about 200- ti steep but not polygonal ground. It was surrounded by grass - which formed c 20-25% cover over egg. The cup was lined with dense grass blocks. The performed a display as in other species. Tail depressed, spread, very clumped to side, both feather ruffled. He bent his chest and through the grass, giving a series soft squeal noises. He remained - nocturnal pectoral about 8 hours

Holman, AK 1963 C. maria 22 June Barrow, Alaska stood nearby as I inspected the nest. It then led me away with the rodent run gesture & squeers. (The hood popped off the nest when I was 15' away). 23 June Checked nest this afternoon at 1500 + it still contained 2 eggs. The 9 was not the next when we approached; The 8 was incubating & jumped off when we were 20' away - gave a strong distraction display. 25 June Flushed a bird from the group on 23.3- So. Shoveler plate. Bird is excellent summer plumage. - When flushed, it gave the distraction call not -- but it stood nearby while I inspected the area for a trail to find nests. No nest could be found but there was a definite cup - with dry Salix leaves in the bottom. 4th about 2 pm, The 8 flushed & moved to the northwest, some are song 23 -- -- -- zet-che- Never buying in quantity. Holmes,R 1963 5. E. marni 11 July Banov, Alaska Nest n-tried nids still being incubated- on The three least vent Mr & Mrs Mrs - the eggs. Today Mr & appeared som off Mr started his destruction display. She gave buzz call Note - 5za-yuuu or s-yuuu. As I approached the nest, Mrs walked all the eggs heading toward my starter swung oft rocks hill. As I approached close, he went int muffled, hummed posture - wet wing out from body (but spread horizontally) + drops - one on our fluttered as he moved 30 minute space. Late, he stood nearly whispering while I scanned the eggs. 14 July Not this a.m. with Yeggs, one / which were pipping. As Mr stood off to his side gave a buzzy zzzht, zzphht - or at time a single sharp bzht. He gave no destruction display today. - at 1000 15 July at 1500 today, all four chicks were hatched + were being brooded by the adult (Mr) 75' from the nest up in a small depression. 3 were banded, 1 was collected. 17 July No seen 1 adult or chicks along plot, 19 July 1st with active hood pohole two molt collected along UTA creek. Holmes 1963 21 July Barrow, Alaska The adult was located 200yds south the nest site on broad ridge close plot. His clutch were not seen but by his behavior, evidently they were present in the vicinity. Frequently, he gave just a short call note: zcht, zcht. Sometimes, 2-3/ These buzzy notes - which are unique to us - as far as I know - even followed by a trill sequence lasting about) see. zcht, zcht eeeee. The trill-part is similar to Not 1 pusillus - when disturbed 5 Aug 1 dm collected near Baffin's area - grass 18 by 2 b - along fuel line 20 Aug 2 different dm seen - further south 1 golden eagle - one was with Gone / Doubtful young RB 23 Aug Several immature seen along fuel line - several along the named [illegible] mark. 25 Aug 6:8 judging in crease foot - near After-all dm.

Gave zsha - & [illegible] note. 17 june Two se - one flying up Decent - [illegible] plot gave a couple introductory notes (?) on a schrta - ehr - culvil was buzzy quality & was quite simile in Murrelet d. fuscicollis. 19 jun Saw at least 2 birds acting together - may + a possible third bird was heard saying the buzzy note (clear above). The day was cold + foggy - The 2 or 3- ground spent snow (the fine feeling (peeling - Stellw jet) - from instance when No 2 came together - No? cockerel fail (fear 2r?) [illegible] + the rumour feeling. Otters, too per No 8 piece saying a courtship display similar to Molt 1 fuscicollis - after every step were repeated to the relatable camera. The aerial display - on clear by Ditcher - in a heaven flight - where the bird's eyes + faces saw this buzzy & not other bird like call. While on ground, No 3 gave a feel note - white feeling

Hobmas, R. 1962 Erolia ruficollis (? ? ?) 6 June 30 may BAKROW, ALASKA 1 Bird in excellent - breeding plumage seen displaying near Volb's area in the open grassy sedge fields. When first seen it was feeding near a Dunlin & a Semipod. When the Dunlin got up to display, the Semipod did abr. Several seconds later, the Surf-snick flew up to a height of 20-25 feet & began < display flight. The bird held it going very stiff in a down curved position & rather slow quicks or short bursts - with brief glides inbetween. Gliding was slow with wings held below the horizontal & down curved tail spread slightly. The head was held up just enough [illegible] To be noticeable. The shallow wingbeats were greatly accentuated & appeared to begin or deliberate a labored fashion. As the bird moved in the air it evoked circle movements & descended in altitude. The call given was a "Shroatz" churning note - of series character to three

Holmes,R. 1962 30 may BARROW, ALASKA given by algern a bairdi - a ratal, root ratal -> a fiell was not heard - The bird descended by floating i out- stitched wings & landing nearby. The call note is not as loud nor as harsh as the Dunlin; & it may possibly be a little higher in pitch. It seems therefore a lay between the Dunlin & Bairdi in the Classificatio logical scheme. Since the bird was displaying so nicely & since it was a mean calm day - I decided I ran back to the lot to get the tape recorder et.al - but when I returned 20 min. later, The bird could not be found. Erolia rubicilla (???) 6 June [=C.alba, see 6 June ?]
