Holmes,R 1963 C. canatus 2. 13 june Barrow, Alaska (Ogotorule Creek, Cape Thompson) with scattered patchy prostate Dryas. Demubating bird fluttered off Nest - tail spreadt depressed, wings stretchedout In the side +fluttering & shuffled off on the Ground in unusual starbird distraction display - it also gave a plaintive war- similar to quail. The bird sat in a similar distraction situation. Once, 100' away from nest, it would crowd down in a snowdrift, fluff it's feathers into the snow, set one for sec. seconds - (wings folded toward me as would put bill under scapulars (displacement) - & then move a few feet and start again. Several distraction displays were seen. - all followed this pattern, except at a low-intensity. The bird often shuffled its foot +scapular feathers - chipped some + performed the recent one - accompanied with sharp-pitched squealing sounds. One who didn't at gave a whit, whet, whit, whel- whil not quite to flugger's call note - but not quite as sharp a hard. The bird was collected & the egg taken. - 87
