The nests were checked during the afternoon
and evening. The one near the lake was
found to be destroyed, apparently by
jaegers. The egg shells and down
were thrown over 3 feet from the
nest site. At 1430, the first
nest (disc. by O'sullivan) was beginning
to hatch and the female was very
slow in leaving the nest. When we
returned at 1900, one young was out
and the other were pipping. At this
time, the & were extremely reluctant
to leave the nest, and finally she
picked her up in order to see the
young. She then went through
somewhat a distraction display,
when she fluffed out on the ground
with wings outspread at 10 o'clock
m.p.m. grounds. Then she would raise
up and hold her neck head as high
as she could and strutted around.
She also emitted a low
quacking note of defiance. A
