Holmes, R. 1960 28 June Wainright, Alaska Several pairs & numerous 8? were noted at Wainright from the flight from Barrow. 29 June Barrow, Alaska Several malm seen between The beach ridge 30 June Skravik, Alaska Two 8? seen on the pond near the wanigan. When flushed, they flew to a good pond beyond it. It seems that 8? may now be gathering & leaving the 4?. In the evening a pair was seen courting near the south end of the plot. Both the 8? & the 9? were performing the head jerk. The 8?, however, seemed to be going at it more vividly, especially since she had a up/down movement combined with a forward/back motion. The 8? seemed to just sweep her up/down without raising the bill above the horizontal. Usually after several seconds of head jerking, The 8? would chase the 9?. She would then jump on him & close him. If this worked, the 8? stood very upright with neck stretched upwards and waddled after the 9? until she
