Clangala hyemalis
5 June Enam River, Alaska
About 50 individuals seen sitting
in the air during the late afternoon.
Both 8? & 4? were present
10 June - Barrow, Alaska
42 were seen flying overhead. The
were in 1 flock & were flying
northward out over Elson Lagoon.
12 June - 2 pr seen on the stream going into
salt water lagoon.
13 June - 1 pr. a pond near Britton's Area
14 June - 1 pr. near ridge plot, Iknook
17 June - 1 pr seen courting in The drum area.
When first noticed, the birds were
flying back and forth over a
small (30' x 50') pond. Finally the
? landed on the water, and the
? flew in right behind her
and landed about 5' from her.
She began swimming, slowly, and
the male followed. At several
second intervals, the male would
throw his head back so that the bird
was straight upwards, so that it
was vertical with the water. As he
did this he gave the loud
har-ha-lack'; the little portion being
seen when the head was vertical.
