1962 June 7 at 8 a.m. traps held 5 meadowlarks (1 on lower line, 4 on upper). saw gray & white cat at Inspiration Point. June 10 still lots of brush rabbits around, including young ones. no young quail yet. mustard still flowering. set bottom 6 rows of Orinda grid at 8 p.m. (quiet hours) 72 traps. a few collections of cuttings and one fairly good runway seen. One board owl seen at edge of pasture, but he would have little hope of catching mice in the 4-5-6-foot high grass-thistle-mustard that covers most of the pasture. June 11 at 7 a.m. traps held one young Rutherford's ground squirrel. Closed traps. moved traps to upper 6 lines of grid at 8 p.m. = 72 traps. June 12 at 7 a.m. traps held 3 meadowlarks and 1 Rutherford's ground squirrel. all 3 meadowlarks were in adjacent traps along fence A1, B1, C1, all adult. Picked up alternate traps and left others set, hence A 2, A4, A6, etc., B1, B3, B5 etc = 36 traps, while during the day caught 1 meadowlark (a repeat) 15 feet away). added alternate traps to rest of grid at 8 p.m. = 72 traps. June 13 at 7 a.m. traps held 1 Jerusalem cricket. Fades like about 2 Rutherford's ground squirrels and 3 meadowlarks per acre. at 4:30 put 50 Sherman's at Charlie Hill Rd, Orinda. no runway seen. June 14 at 7 a.m. traps held 3 Rutherford's ground squirrels, 1 mouse, 1 deer mouse, and 1 Jerusalem cricket. Trapped and released one of the luthrae (obviously a june). June 15 at 8 a.m. some traps held 1 Rutherford's ground squirrel and 1 large king snake. July 24 Picked up scats on Tilden study area, around sequoia trees and some of the lower trails. Saw no cats.

1963 Reserve July 16 picked up notes on major tribes in Tilders, no bulldozing yet, lots of daisies flowering in trails, very little mustard still flowering, conium still greenish (red yellow), saw no cats, 1 pr final with young. July 17 watched from tower in pasture at 8 p.m., some mustard still flowering, Canada thistle almost dry, fig thistle still green, as well as bristly oaks tongue. Evening was cool and breezy, saw only 1 merotina briefly, but saw at least two mice several times. On one occasion there was a vigorous chase between two mice for about 15 feet, another? mouse covered several yards by moving along fallen weeds 6" or more above ground. During several observing periods lately, I have frequently seen 2 or more merotina within a foot or two of each other, but only one actual contact (face grooming). No chasing, and no squeals, hence no "fights". They are stripping the basal leaves of the big thistle; a browse line about 1 foot up on one of the thistles. One mouse climbed up onto a truncated thistle stalk about 8 inches high and nibbled at the mowed tops. I can find no trace of the top of this plant, so presumably all eaten. July 18 watched mice 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. (DST) in pasture, no wind, lots of mice, sometimes 5 in view at one time. On one occasion a mike was eating a thistle head on the ground, a half-grown mike came up beside it in contact (no scenting), and a third mouse was up in the thistle plant above them, a half-grown one extended considerable grooming around the base of the big thistle from which they have been stripping

1963 learn snepping, plus an adult. Aug. 9 Picked off scats on main trails in Tidden: 5 pta, about half of them in a half dozen piles at the north end of the aven, a place that has been productive on earlier visits this year. Saw several mice and deefgs, two racers, no cats, commin being grown around base. No thumbs. Aug. 11 Picked up scats & pellets in Orinda Pasture. Haven't seen any cats there for months. Watching four towers reveals lots of mice and a few mus in evening and morning, not in middle of day. Saw 3 20-gram young feeding on one green thistle plant at same time, plus a fourth only a foot or so away. Still no fighting (except once at the rolled oats in an exercise wheel when one mouse chased another away accompanied by squealings). At least 2 mice tried to get at the oatmeal by squeezing under the wheel instead of merely stepping into it. Aug. 19 At 5 p.m. set Tidden Bird, every stake = 100 traps. Hot, lots of runways and white marks & droffings. Saw 3 mus or rather while setting at 2 miles. Commin still a triple green, a few thistles still green, but mostly dry. Saw 1 copper bowl on Inspronto Point - Orinda Rd and two red-tails over Tidden area, no cats. Picked off scats along upper Colburn Line (almost none) and on grid. Aug 20 Ran traps at 8 a.m. Sunny, no dew. 62 mice, 15 lether, and 1 mus , = 78 mice ! 1 DIT. Closed traps. Saw no cats, mice seemed in good condition, no scars, soile when handled. Opened traps at 5 p.m., 1 pair at alternate stations = 100 trap

1968 Rees Jan. 8 Put out Calhoun trap line in Tidden Park at 3 p.m. Upper lin only, 60 Museum species fed with peanut butter Cold + cloudy. Saw a few runways, 2 red-tails, sparrow hawk, also put about 24 slammers in some corns and below a football in mustard-thistles where there were a few runways. Jan. 9 Night very cold and cloudy. Calhoun line had 6 Rattlers. 8:30 a.m. The slammers had about 15 Rattlers and 2 Peromyscus momenticus. The 18 Rattlers or 2 Peromyscuses were released. Put traps again at 3 p.m. 1 micaster in the Calhoun line, 2 in the live traps, plus some Rattlers in the live traps. Jan. 10 Heavy rain sometime between midnight and 4 a.m. Most of the Calhown trap lines were sprung by the rain. Caught in Calhoun line were 11 Rattlers and 1 Sorex. The 24 live traps held 1 Pero mouse, and more than 19 Rattlers. Saw sparrow hawk, Jan. 11 Set traps at 5 p.m., cold + clear, Calhoun line had 1 Mike. Live traps held 5 mice at 3 Rattlers. Jan. 12 Setled up traps at 8:30 a.m. Cold + clear, ice on paddles and heavy frost. Calhoun line had 6 Rattlers. Live traps (24) held 17 Rattlers and 2 Peromyscus momenticus (one of them a grey immature). The 24 live traps are noteworthy; mostly set in pairs and close together; Jan. 10 caught 1 Pero and 19 Rattlers (all helft), than on Jan. 11 (picked 2 Pero and 17 Rattlers. Summary of Calhoun's: Jan. 9 Jan. 10 Jan. 11 A M 6 Rattlers 11 Rattlers 6 Rattlers 1 Sorex mouse 1 Sorex mouse P m 1 micaster 1 micaster Total 3 days: 23 Rattlers, 2 Micasters, 1 Sorex.

Pearson 1970 Aug. 10 Orinda, pasture across road from my home, Contra Costa Co. My 1-meter enclosure following a summer of fairly high insecta population: surroundings are dry thistle, scattered dry mustard, dry small grasses, a few dry common stobles on downhill side, a few short oats up to 26" high. also a few still-green bristly ot-tongue, Eriophium paniculatum, and possibly lettuce. Lots of sunrayz and white-maiz just outside the wire. Inside: lots of dead- years stobles of oats and common leaning against wire, lots of oats, some with stobles as thick as a pencil and 5 feet tall, quite a bit of Elymus (more detailed), a few tall sprigs of rye? grass. No mustard, no common, no thistle, nothing else; good thistles mouse cover. Sandy's oat enclosure (Aug. 31): outside mostly med.- sized oats, a few mustard, a few soft-tanks, 2 or 3 possibly lettuce, other grasses but no Elymus. Inside cut-off thistle the enclosure med. oats, 2 prickly lettuces (one 4 ft tall), Hesperia thistle, fat tail, other grass, some goofles digging, one mustard, dried legume. Sandy's Elymus enclosure: mostly Elymus, mixed with light grasses and maybe 10 deer-cropped prickly lettuce, no oats, a few thistles, no mustard for 2 meters. Inside: 5 deer-cropped prickly lettuces and one 3-foot uncropped one, several oats up to 4-1/2 feet and several others cropped, Elymus (the greatest around), a few thistle, and light grasses (brame and Sandy's thistle enclosure: outside is thistle + oats plus a smattering of brame, cropped prickly lettuce, a few

1970 John & Rodadero, 20m, Delt. of Magdalena, Colombia Dec. 27 But 20 small shrews baited with bread in acacia - tipillo than scrub, some rocks, no more sign. Quite arid, little grass, some "fig" bushes that look like small succulent trees with large palmate leaves, some vine-like bushes with morning glory flowers, and scattered other bushes. Little grass in spots of no goats or sheep seen, a couple of cows in fenced "pasture". Dec. 28 One golden marmoset in traps; brought it out by leaving it on the counter of a fritter stand on highway home. It was caught in the most tangled spot on the line. Dec. 29 19 traps at dusk, some live but baited with yucca. A motor says there are "gatos parcos" here - maybe tayra-tayras, since Carol & John saw one this morning. Dec. 30 Two more marmosets, one of them in same set as the one on Dec. 28. Bread discarded Dec. 28 still lying on ground untouched. Lots of acacia branches the size of a finger have been cut and are being cut by large grey beetles? Cut like with a pipe cutter. The extent of damage is impressive. Birds seen in the scrub are quail, dove (nesting), hummingbird with striped face and feeding close to the ground on insects, cactus wrens, mocking bird, and "vireos" with black face and belly. at dusk set 19 traps in marshy - sedge - grassy strip on the edge of town. Some cattle, no runway. Dec. 31 2 mice and 1 toad in traps at 6 a.m. Released them. Left at 8 a.m. with family & CJ Ralphs in rented jeep headed for the hills. Took the road southward of Santa Marta through mines and El Campaño. Trees begin at only a

1971 Florida, Carlos Renta Co [pasture] April 25 The pasture outside the enclosure is mostly Bromus mollis with scattered oats, gerasium, small thistle (blooming), burr clover (blooming), vetches (blooming), sally's tongue, and further up the hill a few lupines. I don't recall lupines before. Two or three yards above the enclosure is fairly pure [illegible] thistle, then gerasium and mustard. The tops of many of the vetches have been grazed off (deer?). Inside the enclosure is a dramatically tall and dense stand of vetch and oats, each of them bigger and more robust than anything visible for 20 yards around (and probably nowhere else in the pasture. The tops of many of the oats and vetches have been grazed. Very little mollis made, but some Elymus, a little Elymus outside also. [photo on back] Gardy's pure oats enclosure set up fall 1969 is likewise dominated by vetch, some oats, almost no mollis although lots of it nearby (surrounding). Her Elymus glabrous is surrounded by mollis, scattered Elymus, scattered oats, a little mustard. Inside it is oats, Elymus, brome, and. Her pure canary enclosure now stands amiled young canary, seeded mustard, and thistle. A few [factures], inside it has many factures, thistle, canary, a couple of mustard, as a couple of Epilobium. A few E[illegible] outside also. Main diff is much more factures inside. Truffling along the fence for microtus emerged with 30 take -> no mice. No runops, no cuttings, this was 2 to 3 weeks ago

Lauren 1971 Hastarp Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. June 4 Set the three Calhoun lines at 4-7 pm, but with certain departures from standard procedure owing to shortage of traps. The chaparral line had only one trap at the last 6 stations and only 2 traps at each of stations 24-30 (since 16 traps short on extension). These are the new additions to the chaparral line. The meadow trap line had 5 rat traps and 1 small Victor mouse trap used at the last 3 stations. Saw a pair redbutan oak line. The spring has been very cool, few hot days; oats mostly still green. Long field full of blooming lupines; Jimmy Bell says best lupines year ever. No microtus sign. June 5 Night cold and clear; morning clear, lots of dew. Ran traps at 6:30 with Phil Mayer, Andy Griffin, and Steve Davis. Chaparral line had lots of tucker, some Peromyscus calif., two Dipose, no birds (see summary). Meadow line had only two microtuses. Oak line had 1 spring zenatia in middle of line under the second limb. Several impression is that there are lots of gobblers + lodgers this year. Saw "herd" of 7 large turkey on school hill. Day sunny, windy, cool. Saw one more lone turkey about usual number of deer. Ran oak line at 3 pm, nothing. See species account of lodger encounters. Meadow line at 6 pm had 2 very stinky microtuse, and chaparral line had a large round lizard at station 31. Phil added the 16 missing speckles to this line and I replaced the 5 rat traps on the meadow line with museum speckles. Took photo of Dave Brodby's damage. June 6 Night cold, clear, almost full moon. Ran trap at 6:30 am.

Pearson 1971 June 5 Badger Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. Saw a badger snuffling in the grass at the south-west edge of the dry field on School Hill. Stopped to watch him from 20ft. after about 2 min (3:25 pm DST) I heard something coming through the grass in the meadow behind me, I turned slowly and another smaller badger was coming towards me. It came up cautiously and sniffed at the camera case at my feet, peered up at me, then took alarm and ran off through the grass, doing a loop around toward the forest. The noise of No. 2 running through the grass frightened No. 1, who ran into the woods. No. 2's course intersected No. 1's and so No. 2 followed precisely in the trail of No. 1 and they met under a poison oak thicket and rubbed noses, then started to hunt again. I followed No. 1 and lost track of No. 2, but after about 5 minutes No. 2 headed toward me and came up to about 3 feet, peered at me, then went slowly off in another direction. I followed No. 1 as he fast hunted through the coffee (grassy weedy floor with lots of dead leaves mixed in). In 35 minutes of observation the badger covered 227 yds bee line or about 270 yds total, all but being pretty much in one direction. He did no real digging, all just snuffling and scratching a few times here and there. On 3 occasions he seemed to find something and chewed on it for about 20 or 30 seconds; I am pretty sure it was not mouse or gopher. Granoffens were abundant in the meadow, but I would not expect him to chew them that long. I was never more than 30 feet from him, frequently only 10. Much of the time I walked along beside him,
