leaves - like killing the goose. Breeze line
on this plant has been going up about an inch per
day and is now more than 1 foot high
was surprised to see mice several times up in a big thistle
cutting green leaves. Also saw a snake growing the
"trunk" of a blooming mustard plant. Saw one brief
microtus chase, silent. The mice move more
softly, more steadily, more "purposefully" than
the snake. Most activity is about 8:15, which is
after sunset but before bat-flying time.
Kneba reports on his census of his Tilden control
area: "Last week caught 315 microtus on the 1 +/- acre,
up considerably from 2 wks. before. Rat 450/acre +/- 10%."
Breeding now 90% stopped on control" i.e. more
mice than ever before!"
July 22 Watched mice in pasture with Bill Hamilton
at 8 p.m. He saw a snake chase off a mouse (possibly
Rathus, but almost surely microtus).
July 23 Picked up seats in Tilden. No cats seen. No bulldozing
yet. Heard loud, insistent squeaking near a log and
saw a large garter snake carrying off a 10-grain,
squeaking microtus.
July 25 Picked up seats in Tilden. Saw one of each, 1 garter
snake, occasional deriforme, two cats.
Aug. 5 Watched mice from tower in pasture at 8 p.m. Still
lots of snake and a few mice seen. Big thistle all dry (or
stripped) now. Mice are barking lustily at tongue. Heard
no fighting. Two young born owls squealing and
