0.6 mi. NW Academy, 520 ft., Fresno Co
Jan 24
To Academy with Benson, Young, Patton, and Carol
Patton. Arrived 6:15 p.m., dark & rainy. Much rain
past 2 weeks, everything soggy. Much rain overnight
Jan 25
Put about 20 woodchucks near river (smaller) northeast
of the cemetery at 7:30 a.m., all in sandy soil. Later
increased to 30. Before noon caught 5 or 6 Thoroughpigs,
mostly bright colored ones. A passing motorist told me
worst rains in history.
at noon moved to 2.9 mi N and 1.4 mi E Clovis
and counted in field right for Mrs. Green's house.
Got about 15 woodchucks at 1:00 p.m. and caught
about 5 gobblers by 5 p.m. * Heavy rain overnight,
Jan 26
Pun traps at 7:30 a.m. 3 or 4 more gobblers. At about 8:30
clovis,
moved to 4.6 mi N 1.4 mi E, 400 ft. Much more standing water
further on at 2.9 mi. N. The soil seems to be fairly sandy
but quite red. In a mining pool operation at the 4.6 mi
location the sandy red stuff goes down several feet
but becomes consolidated into an almost-sandstone
at about 4 feet, and a gravelly conglomerate (loose)
about a foot thick below that. North of the levee is all
flooded this morning, with marooned farmhouses etc.
Set 2 woodchucks about 60 in red sandy on edge of boggy
fields. Very few woodchucks visible.
