Pearson 1963 Aug 21 Saw scrubjuncos and sharp-shins? banks, sunny. No cats. Ran traps at 7:30 a.m. Sunny. Saw 2 Sparrow larks and 1 red-tail, no cats. Traps held 76 microurine, 6 leithro, and 1 Leioforms = E 85. From the large number of recaptures of June and earlier microurine, it is clear that survival has been good, almost no traps in droppings. Furthermore, from the huge catches and the very few recaptures of yesterday's tagged mice, the population must be enormous. No young, no nesting &?, no open vagina. Picked up seats in P.M. Found one very dead microurine at 5pm on trail. Saw 1 black cat, moved traps to alternate site, 1/2 hr. at each = 100 traps, Sunny. Aug 22 Ran traps at 8 a.m., overcast. 77 microurine, 11 Leithro, and 1 musa = E 89 mice. Finished picking up seats. Found 1 dead snake, 1 dead leithro, and the incisors and front of skull of [illegible] a recently-eaten gopher. Saw 1 dark cat, Keifer is trying to catch raccoons on his area. Many chutecks of quail this year on the Tilden area and every- where in Orinda. Musing of the microurine are huge and few of them are under 30 gms. Average out, probably 40-45g. Aug 27-28 To Brooks Island overnight with Carol. Set 66 Museum Specials and 60 Forquoth live traps at 6 p.m. Night mostly clear, high fog until 9 a.m. Caught 33 microurine in Museum Specials and 32 in live traps, saw numerous rats, even upon ridge, and 1 garter snake.
