1970 John & Rodadero, 20m, Delt. of Magdalena, Colombia Dec. 27 But 20 small shrews baited with bread in acacia - tipillo than scrub, some rocks, no more sign. Quite arid, little grass, some "fig" bushes that look like small succulent trees with large palmate leaves, some vine-like bushes with morning glory flowers, and scattered other bushes. Little grass in spots of no goats or sheep seen, a couple of cows in fenced "pasture". Dec. 28 One golden marmoset in traps; brought it out by leaving it on the counter of a fritter stand on highway home. It was caught in the most tangled spot on the line. Dec. 29 19 traps at dusk, some live but baited with yucca. A motor says there are "gatos parcos" here - maybe tayra-tayras, since Carol & John saw one this morning. Dec. 30 Two more marmosets, one of them in same set as the one on Dec. 28. Bread discarded Dec. 28 still lying on ground untouched. Lots of acacia branches the size of a finger have been cut and are being cut by large grey beetles? Cut like with a pipe cutter. The extent of damage is impressive. Birds seen in the scrub are quail, dove (nesting), hummingbird with striped face and feeding close to the ground on insects, cactus wrens, mocking bird, and "vireos" with black face and belly. at dusk set 19 traps in marshy - sedge - grassy strip on the edge of town. Some cattle, no runway. Dec. 31 2 mice and 1 toad in traps at 6 a.m. Released them. Left at 8 a.m. with family & CJ Ralphs in rented jeep headed for the hills. Took the road southward of Santa Marta through mines and El CampaƱo. Trees begin at only a
