22 cats in the last year, all between the Nature Area and the Bragilair Room, mostly near the buildings, and "none near my area". April 17 A phone call from Mr Nelson, director of the nature program in Tilden Park, disclosed the following information about cat control in the park: 15 cats were shot by the Ranger Patrol in August, September, and October of 1963, 5 of them in nature area, 3 on archery range, 2 at Fern Picnic area, and the other 5 at various places between the playfield and the train ride. This information came mostly from Ranger Gonza, who did most (or all?) of the cat control control. In addition to these, there were about 9 killed or removed from the nature study area by the naturalists at the same time = 24 from within 1 1/2 miles of my area. April 20 Put 100 mouse boards on Tilden Grid at 3 p.m. Date lush, no good runways but several piles of cuttings. Lots of redwings. Saw no cats x Talked with Jim Roof in Tilden Botanical Garden. He says they planted thousands of privet in 1939 but mice killed all of them. He planted thousands more in 1940, many of which have survived (to his disgust). He protects cats in botanical gardens.
