In eight traps set near Inspiration Point at 5 p.m.
last night were 3 Minks and 3 Raccoon. Saved the 3
minks for dissection.
Oct. 6 During the flotation-incineration process being used
to separate game and ear tags from carnivore scat, most
of the mole crickets are lost; and there have been numerous.
Also lost are cormorants; there have been at least 3
so far.
Cut sections of Mink's lungs. Those listed as
"hemorrhagic" at dissection show in slides large areas
in which the alveoli, all alveoli, are filled with acidophilic
fluid (blood?). Frequently 1/2 the area of a section
shows one lobe will be thus congested.
Judging from the small air photos in Brant's
thesis, I have been looking up scat from an area
of about 40 acres. My grid is about in the center
of this area.
Oct. 9 Orvis. Picked up 6 owl pellets and a point of scat
north of pasture. Owl pellets = 29 mole crickets, 19 Mink,
2 mm, 1 Peromyscus, and 1 rabbit.
